South Jeolla Province Holds Meeting with Young Farmers in Preparation for ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City’… Exploring Future Agricultural Policy Directions
21 Young Farmers from 5 Sectors Including Food, Livestock, and 6th Industry Attend - Listening to On-site Difficulties and Suggesting System Improvements Including Expansion of Farmers' Subsidies
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has organized a gathering to listen to the vivid voices of young farmers who will lead the future of agriculture, in line with the massive regional changes brought about by the launch of the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City.’
South Jeolla Province announced that it recently held the ‘Nongdam (Agricultural Talk) Meeting, a Candid Chat Room with Young Farmers’ at a cafe in Naju to gather policy opinions from young farmers and discuss the direction of future agricultural policies.
Twenty-one young farmers actively working in five sectors—food crops, vegetables, livestock, fruit trees, and the 6th industry—attended the meeting. At the event, Jeollanam-do Province introduced its current support policies for young farmers and shared best practices from the field, while also engaging in a heated discussion regarding the difficulties they face during the settlement process and the need to improve unreasonable systems.
During the presentations of best practices, the trial and error and growth experiences of young farmers were fully shared, resonating deeply with the attendees.
First, Yoo Ji-hee, a returnee to farming who produces cherry tomatoes in Goheung, shared her journey to settling down after receiving funding from the Young Farmer Startup Support Fund in 2019. Ms. Yoo stated, "The settlement programs for young farmers supported by the government and Jeollanam-do Province were a great help in becoming independent," and expressed her aspiration to "act as a bridge to help local young farmers prosper together in the future."
Next, Yoon Ji-hwan, CEO of the distribution corporation 'Atta Dalda,' which operates a smart farm in Muan, presented his story of challenges, from undergoing training at the Gimje Smart Farm Innovation Valley in 2019 to developing his own unique character. Representative Yoon stated, “Although Jeonnam lacks cultural and residential infrastructure compared to the capital region, it possesses inexhaustible agricultural resources capable of creating new added value,” adding, “We plan to establish an agricultural corporation to expand our business into the processing sector.”
The young farmers attending the meeting poured out practical suggestions based on their experiences in the field. Key suggestions included: ▲ establishing a customized agricultural machinery support program for young farmers; ▲ expanding the eligibility for the Farmers’ Allowance from existing business owners to individual farmers; and ▲ expanding the Jeonnam-style interest differential subsidy program.
The Jeonnam Provincial Government plans to thoroughly review the proposals made by young farmers at this meeting and incorporate them into provincial administration. Furthermore, it intends to actively propose matters that are difficult to resolve internally or require legal amendments to relevant government ministries.
