South Jeolla Province Hosts ‘Island Moonlight Gourmet Event’ Captivating UN Climate Officials... Globalizing Namdo’s Taste and Culture

Gourmet Event Held at Yeosu Gyeongdo Featuring Chef Kim Seong-un... Boosting Promotion for ‘2026 Year of Visiting Jeonnam Islands’

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province showcased the beauty of the province’s islands and the essence of Namdo cuisine to international organization officials visiting Korea for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Climate Week.

South Jeolla Province announced that it successfully held the ‘Island Moonlight Gourmet Event,’ the first program of the ‘Island Moonlight Culture School’ commemorating the ‘2026 Year of Visiting Jeonnam Islands,’ at Yeosu Gyeongdo on the 23rd. This event was organized to introduce the region’s excellent ingredients to the world and to share the value of island ecological resources. Approximately 70 UN climate officials, including Deputy Executive Secretary Noura Hamladji of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, attended the event to experience Jeonnam's culinary culture.

The event opened with performances by the Jeonnam Provincial Traditional Music Orchestra, featuring Pansori and a Haegeum and guitar ensemble, delivering the melodies of Korean tradition. For the subsequent gourmet gathering, Chef Kim Seong-un, who gained attention for his appearance on Netflix's *Chef Kim*, personally prepared the dishes. Chef Kim received high praise from attendees for presenting a premium course meal that reinterpreted fresh Namdo ingredients—such as seaweed, shellfish, and octopus sourced from Yeosu—with a modern sensibility.

Participants also took part in a seaweed bibimbap performance, personally experiencing the island's unique food culture. Notably, this initiative, which combined tourism and climate issues beyond simple dining, garnered positive evaluations from international organization officials as a new alternative for "sustainable tourism." Deputy Secretary General Noura Hamraji remarked, “The island gastronomy of Jeonnam experienced today is a wise way to practice climate action that goes beyond mere tourism,” adding, “Jeonnam’s example, combining local resources and community, will serve as a model for global sustainable tourism.”

Starting with this gourmet event, Jeonnam Province plans to continuously discover participatory content created jointly by travel YouTubers, social media supporters, and island residents through the ‘Island Moonlight Culture School.’

Jeonnam Vice Governor Hwang Ki-yeon emphasized, “This event is a high-quality experiential program that combines food, nature, and culture,” and added, “We will develop Jeonnam’s islands into world-class destinations for extended stays by adding diverse content such as concerts and film festivals.”
