South Jeolla Province Deploys AI and Drones for ‘Precise Collection’ of Marine Debris… Green Light for Successful Hosting of Yeosu Island Expo
Joint Public-Private Marine Cleanup Activity Conducted at Hitdo Beach, Yeosu on the 15th - Nation’s First ‘Clean Jeonnam-Up Cycling Coastal Management System’ Activated… 50 Tons of Marine Debris Collected
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has launched a smart marine cleanup activity incorporating cutting-edge technology to ensure the successful hosting of the '2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.'
South Jeolla Province announced that it conducted a joint public-private marine cleanup activity on the 15th in the area of Hitdo Beach, Sepo-ri, Hwayang-myeon, Yeosu-si.
Approximately 120 people participated in this cleanup, including officials from South Jeolla Province, Yeosu City, the Korea Land Information Corporation (LX), and private organizations. They intensively collected and cleaned up about 50 tons of marine debris, such as abandoned buoys and fishing gear, left on the coastline.
In particular, this initiative drew attention as it marked the full-scale operation of the "Clean Jeonnam-Up Cycling Coastal Management System," which Jeonnam Province established as the first of its kind in the nation. This system is an advanced monitoring technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze aerial and drone footage to determine the precise location and quantity of marine debris.
Through cooperation with the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (LIGInc.), Jeonnam Province analyzed aerial footage of the entire city of Yeosu using AI, confirming in advance that approximately 348 tons of marine debris were left abandoned within the jurisdiction. Subsequently, precision drone photography was conducted on densely populated areas near the Expo site on the 7th and 8th to create a distribution map of 68 tons of debris, which served as the basis for implementing a practical "pinpoint collection" operation.
Breaking away from traditional search methods that relied solely on visual inspection, this initiative has implemented a "seamless purification system" for the first time. This system utilizes precision drone photography and AI analysis of debris volume to deploy collection teams to the optimal locations.
Currently, the annual amount of marine debris generated in Yeosu City is estimated at approximately 4,000 tons. Yeosu City has deployed 105 marine environment guardians, 3 marine cleanup vessels, and 16 small fishing boats to create a pristine marine environment in preparation for the Expo. The city is accelerating cleanup efforts, having collected 1,350 tons of debris so far, primarily in island areas.
Jeonnam Province plans to operate an AI and drone analysis system continuously in cooperation with the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation until the Yeosu World Island Expo opens. Through this, the province intends to precisely identify trash in blind spots along the coast and focus on its collection.
Park Geun-sik, Head of the Maritime and Port Division of Jeonnam Province, stated, "Thanks to the AI system established last year, we were able to accurately assess the trash situation around the Expo site and conduct efficient cleanup activities." He added, "We will continue to actively utilize cutting-edge technology to maintain Jeonnam's seas as pristine waters comparable to the best in the world." Meanwhile, starting with this joint public-private cleanup activity, Jeollanam-do and Yeosu City plan to spread a "self-governing marine cleanup culture" in which relevant agencies and local residents voluntarily participate, and will continue to explore ways to link the collected marine waste with the upcycling industry for repurposing as resources.
