South Jeolla Province Conducts Joint ‘Coastal Safety’ Inspection in Preparation for 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo

Proactive Identification of Risk Factors Around the Venue with Related Agencies Including the West Sea Regional Coast Guard and Yeosu City - Accelerating the Establishment of a Seamless Safety Network, Including Expansion of Safety Facilities and Establishment of Access Control Zones

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has embarked on on-site efforts to ensure the safety of tourists ahead of the ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Expo,’ which will be held this coming September.

South Jeolla Province announced that on the 8th, it conducted a joint inspection of the conditions around the Expo venue and coastal risk areas with the West Sea Regional Coast Guard, the Yeosu Regional Office of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Yeosu City.

This inspection was organized to prevent safety accidents that may occur due to the recent increase in visitors to the sea, and to preemptively block risk factors near the Expo site where large crowds are expected to gather. The main inspection areas are key coastal zones within Yeosu City, including the Dolsan Jinmo District, the main venue for the Expo, and Gukdong Port. The joint inspection team focused on checking the installation of vehicle fall prevention facilities, the condition of life-saving equipment and safety signs, and the degree of deterioration of safety facilities.

In particular, the province concentrated on proactively identifying safety blind spots, centering on coastal areas where a high concentration of tourists is expected. The province plans to immediately establish practical corrective measures for high-risk areas, such as installing additional safety railings and establishing restricted access zones when necessary.

Jeonnam Province has selected 80 high-risk coastal accident zones within its jurisdiction this year and is actively carrying out projects for the new installation and renovation of safety facilities.

In addition, to ensure on-site accident prevention, the province is strengthening administrative support by permanently deploying "Coastal Safety Guardians" and providing supplies such as safety shoes and gloves necessary for their activities. Park Geun-sik, Director of the Maritime and Port Division of Jeollanam-do, emphasized, “This joint inspection by relevant agencies is the most fundamental and important procedure supporting the successful hosting of the Yeosu World Island Expo,” adding, “We will mobilize all available resources to immediately address any vulnerabilities discovered during the inspection.”

He further stated, “We will maintain a close cooperative system with related agencies, such as the Korea Coast Guard, and do our utmost to create a robust coastal safety ecosystem so that tourists visiting Jeollanam-do and residents can enjoy the sea with peace of mind.”

Meanwhile, Jeollanam-do plans to continue periodic patrols and facility inspections until the opening of the Expo, while simultaneously conducting public awareness campaigns to prevent maritime accidents.
