Gwangju Metropolitan City Holds Meeting to Consolidate Volunteer Capabilities… Establishes Integrated Cooperation System

Meeting to Consolidate Volunteer Capabilities for the 9th Elected Administration Held… Officials from 29 Metropolitan and Local Centers Gather in One Place - Fully Launched Integrated Support System for Successful Hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and Disaster Preparedness

(Break News Gwangju, Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City has set out to consolidate the capabilities of approximately 1.11 million local volunteers to establish a metropolitan-local cooperation system aimed at solving community issues and supporting large-scale international events.

On the 30th, Gwangju Metropolitan City held the "Meeting to Consolidate Volunteer Capabilities for the 9th Elected Administration of Gwangju Metropolitan City" at the Jeonnam Human Resources and Lifelong Education Promotion Agency, where they intensively discussed cooperation measures between metropolitan and local volunteer centers.

Currently, a systematic volunteer network is operating in Gwangju Metropolitan City, centered around two metropolitan volunteer centers and 27 local volunteer centers in cities, counties, and districts. The number of registered volunteers alone amounts to approximately 1.11 million, and they are active in various fields, including securing community safety nets, promoting welfare, and supporting major events.

Approximately 50 officials from metropolitan and 27 city, county, and district volunteer centers attended the meeting to share the future direction of the Special City's volunteer policy. The participants agreed to work together for the successful implementation of urgent issues and major projects, including the operation of volunteers for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, integrated volunteer support for disaster preparedness, the revitalization of youth volunteer corps, and preparations for the National Volunteer Center Conference.

In particular, they decided to make the successful hosting of the upcoming '2026 Yeosu World Island Expo' their top priority and to clearly divide responsibilities among the agencies for the entire process, from volunteer recruitment and training to on-site placement and operation. To this end, they will fully launch a 'Special City-level Volunteer Collaboration System' that links metropolitan and local centers into a single network.

Furthermore, Jeonnam Gwangju Special City plans to further strengthen cooperation between metropolitan and local centers, starting with this meeting. We plan to complete an ‘integrated volunteer platform’ that swiftly encompasses not only large-scale international events but also responses to disasters and emergencies, which have become more frequent due to the climate crisis, as well as the resolution of local community issues.

Kang Kyung-moon, Director of the Happiness Communication Office of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "The 1.11 million volunteers are the most reliable driving force leading the city," adding, "I expect that the intricate volunteer cooperation network established through this meeting will serve as a foundation for the successful hosting of the Yeosu World Island Expo and for creating a safer and warmer local community."
