Successfully Concludes 7-Day, 6-Night Itinerary Marking 10th Anniversary of Sister City Relationship… Includes Agricultural and Fisheries Practical Training, University Student Mentoring, and History & Culture Experiences
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City has successfully concluded the ‘2026 Jeonnam Gwangju-Kochi Prefecture Youth Exchange Project,’ held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its sister city relationship with Kochi Prefecture, Japan, thereby further solidifying the foundation for friendly cooperation between the two regions centered on the future generation.
A total of eight members of the visiting delegation participated in this event, which took place in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, for a 7-day, 6-night schedule until the 4th. The delegation included six 2nd-year students from Jeonnam Natural Science High School, their supervising teachers, and officials from Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City.
During the itinerary, the delegation visited local specialized vocational high schools, such as Kochi Agricultural High School and Kochi Marine High School, in succession. Participating students gathered with Japanese students to conduct major courses and field training together, broadening their comprehensive understanding of each region's educational curriculum and advanced agricultural and fisheries technologies. Following this, they visited Kochi Prefectural University, engaging in in-depth conversations with local students on topics such as campus life, career planning, and international competency development, thereby expanding their perspectives on global lifestyles and future career paths.
A diverse cultural and historical exploration program also followed. Students visited major attractions, including Kochi Castle—a representative historical stronghold of Kochi Prefecture—as well as the Yosakoi Information Exchange Center, Manga Base, and Nakatsu Valley, experiencing the region's natural environment and culture from various angles. In particular, the fan-making experience at a traditional craft village and the visit to tea farms, a local specialty, served as opportunities to fully experience Kochi Prefecture's unique traditional industries and lifestyle culture.
At the end of the exchange schedule, they had a meaningful time laying flowers at the Memorial Monument to Mrs. Yun Hak-ja, which is considered a symbol of the long-standing humanitarian exchange and friendship between the two regions. After reflecting on the significance of the historical solidarity built between the two regions, the participants attended the final report meeting to share the achievements of the 6-night, 7-day exchange and discuss constructive measures to continuously expand cooperative projects at the youth level in the future.
A student from Jeonnam Natural Science High School who participated in the exchange program said, “I was able to naturally become close with local peers by overcoming language barriers while participating in school classes and diverse experiential activities together.” The student added, “I felt a deep sense of bonding despite cultural differences, and I want to continue this precious friendship in the future.”
The supervising teacher who led the delegation also commented, “I witnessed significant growth in the students as they actively communicated and cooperated even in an unfamiliar environment.” The teacher added, “As this exchange served as an opportunity to cultivate global competence and an international perspective among the students, I look forward to the steady continuation of multifaceted exchanges between the youth of both regions.” An official from the Integrated Special City stated, “This youth exchange, conducted in the meaningful year marking the 10th anniversary of the sister city relationship, served as a valuable momentum for the youth of both regions—who will lead the future—to understand each other and build deep friendships,” adding, “We plan to continue expanding practical exchange and cooperation programs with Kochi Prefecture in various fields such as education, culture, and industry.”
