Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Protects the Health of Rural Elderly Amid Heatwaves with ‘Visiting Health Bus’

On-site visits to medically underserved areas, including the Won-dong Senior Center in Muan… Intensive promotion of heat-related illness prevention activities and basic health checkups

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Amid the prolonged heatwave, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City has launched customized on-site healthcare services to protect the health of elderly residents in rural areas with limited access to medical institutions.

Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is significantly strengthening heat-related illness prevention activities and close-knit health and welfare support by actively utilizing the ‘Visiting Health Bus’ for the elderly population vulnerable to heatwaves.

Recently, the medical team from the Visiting Health Bus made a surprise visit to the Won-dong Senior Center in Muan-gun to thoroughly check the health status of elderly farmers and seniors living alone who are easily exposed to the sweltering heat. On-site, body temperature and basic vital signs were measured, and signs of heat-related illnesses were closely monitored. Safety items designed to help regulate body temperature during hot weather, such as cooling sprays and towels, were distributed, along with instructions on their proper use.

Following this, comprehensive education on preventing heat-related illnesses was conducted, tailored to the needs of the elderly. Key guidelines covered included: frequent hydration; avoiding agricultural work and outdoor activities during daytime hours (12 PM to 5 PM); taking sufficient rest in a cool place; and immediately evacuating and reporting any symptoms, such as dizziness or headaches.

Currently, one mobile health bus is stationed in the eastern region (Suncheon Medical Center) and another in the western region (Gangjin Medical Center), operating systematically three times a week. It directly visits medically underserved areas where visiting hospitals and clinics is difficult due to geographical and economic conditions, providing not only medical, dental, and traditional Korean medicine treatments but also comprehensive basic health checkups—such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks and osteoporosis screenings—and health consultations. In particular, a support system has been established to ensure that seniors classified as high-risk for chronic diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes, receive continuous follow-up care by coordinating with local public health centers and medical institutions.

The "Visiting Health Bus" began its first operation in 2023 as part of a project supported by the Fund for Responding to Local Extinction. Since its introduction, it has directly visited a total of 663 villages and approximately 14,000 residents, providing over 115,000 instances of customized healthcare services, and has established itself as a core pillar of the local health safety net. Jeong Gwang-seon, Head of the Health and Welfare Headquarters of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, “As the heatwave caused by climate change becomes prolonged, the elderly, who have weak immune systems, are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, making meticulous care more urgent than ever.” He added, “I will personally visit healthcare sites to check on the well-being of seniors in the region, ensuring they can lead healthy and safe daily lives even amidst the scorching heat.”
