전남광주특별시는 오는 2029년 국립장흥호국원 개원 전까지 운영하는 ‘해남 남도광역추모공원 임시안치소’의 지원 대상을 기존 전남 지역 주민에서 광주 지역 주민까지 전격 확대한다고 밝혔다.
그동안 해당 임시안치소는 전남에 주소를 둔 국가유공자와 배우자만 이용할 수 있어 광주지역 국가유공자들은 혜택에서 제외되어 왔다. 이번 조치는 전남광주통합특별시 출범을 계기로 관내 보훈 대상자 간의 차별을 없애고, 지역 전역에 걸쳐 균등하고 신속한 보훈 예우를 제공하기 위해 추진됐다.
현행 ‘국립묘지의 설치 및 운영에 관한 법률’에 따르면, 장흥호국원 안장을 희망하는 국가유공자가 개원 전에 사망해 타지역 국립묘지에 먼저 안장될 경우 향후 장흥호국원으로의 이장이 불가능하다. 전남광주특별시는 이러한 문제를 해결하고 유가족의 불편을 줄이고자 2025년부터 해남 남도광역추모공원에 임시안치소를 마련해 운영해 오고 있다.
