South Korea is currently facing multiple structural problems simultaneously. The world's lowest birth rate is making population decline a reality, and high suicide rates demonstrate that this is not merely an individual issue, but rather how fragile the social safety net is for the entire society. Generational conflict, gender conflict, and ideological clashes are undermining trust within the community.
The international community is not much different. War, terrorism, competition for hegemony among nations, and climate change are making the challenges humanity must address even more complex.
Governments around the world have been striving to resolve these issues by investing massive financial resources and establishing new laws and institutions. However, it is also becoming evident that economic support and institutional improvements alone have limitations in resolving conflicts in interpersonal relationships or restoring trust within the community.
Ultimately, what is needed is to go beyond institutions and policies to re-establish people's consciousness and values. This is why discussions are required to reinterpret the fundamental principles and ethics that sustain a community to suit modern society.
**Common Values Spoken of by Traditional Thought**
Although their modes of expression differ, major philosophies of the East and West have considered responsibility and consideration in human relationships as important values. Confucianism viewed filial piety—respecting one's parents—as the starting point of social order, while Buddhism regarded all living beings as objects of compassion. Taoism emphasized the harmony between humans and nature, and Christianity presented love for God and love for one's neighbor as core values.
Although each philosophy has a different background, they present a common direction: respect for humanity and community responsibility.
**The Proposal of 'Hongik 7 Hyo'**
I propose 'Hongik 7 Hyo' as a concept that reinterprets these traditional values in a modern context.
Hongik 7 Hyo consists of seven stages: Self-Filial Piety (Jahyo), Parental Filial Piety (Chinhyo), Family Filial Piety (Gahyo), Lineage Filial Piety (Jonghyo), Generational Filial Piety (Sehyo), National Filial Piety (Gukhyo), and Universal Filial Piety (Tonghyo). It is an ethical system that starts with caring for the individual and expands the scope of responsibility to include family, community, the nation, and further, humanity and nature.
Self-Filial Piety refers to an attitude of cherishing one's own life and health. Chinhyo and Gahyo emphasize responsibility and care among family members, while Jonghyo and Sehyo embody a sense of community directed toward neighbors and the local community. Gukhyo refers to responsibility toward the national community, and Tonghyo extends to values that encompass humanity and the global environment.
I believe these values can serve as an ethical standard to mitigate the deepening conflicts in modern society.
**National Policies Must Also Consider Community Restoration**
Social integration is difficult to achieve solely through laws and punishment. Long-term social assets, such as education, culture, and civic consciousness, must be cultivated alongside them.
I argue that the government must pay attention not only to economic growth and welfare policies but also to character education that enhances community trust and the spread of civic ethics. Creating a culture of mutual respect and consideration in schools, local communities, and public institutions is the foundation for a sustainable society.
**Rebuilding the Community**
Today's problems—such as birth rates, suicide, conflict, and the climate crisis—are difficult to explain by any single factor alone. While economic policies and welfare systems are certainly important, society can be maintained more stably when the values and ethics that sustain the community operate in tandem. Evaluations of the Seven Principles of Hongik (benefiting all humanity) may vary. However, the very awareness that modern society must contemplate a new ethical and value system for the restoration of community is a topic well worth discussing. After all, a sustainable society is built not merely on institutions, but on the trust and sense of responsibility of its people.
