This Summer Will Be Hotter Than Average… Jeonnam Fire Department Preemptively Activates ‘Customized Emergency Medical System for Heat-Related Illnesses’

Ambulances and Pump-Ambulances Equipped with Heatwave Response Equipment to Operate Constantly Until September - 733 Heat-Related Patients Transported Over the Past 3 Years… Special Caution Urged for Outdoor Activities in Farms and Fields

(Jangheung = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = As temperatures this summer are expected to be higher than average, the Jeonnam Fire Department is taking preemptive measures to respond to heatwaves and protect the lives and safety of residents.

The Jeonnam Fire Department announced that it will operate a ‘Customized Emergency Medical System for Heat-Related Illnesses’ until this coming September to prepare for the annually increasing number of heat-related illnesses.

According to the 2026 climate forecast released by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the probability that this summer's average temperature will be higher than average reaches 70%, leading to a projected significant increase in the number of days with heatwaves and tropical nights. In fact, over the past three years, there have been a total of 820 heatwave-related ambulance dispatches in the Jeonnam region, with nearly 733 patients transported to hospitals after receiving emergency treatment.

In particular, heat-related illnesses were found to occur primarily in outdoor activity spaces such as the sea, mountains, and farms. With the start of the farming season, the Jeonnam Fire Department emphasized the need for special caution among outdoor workers and the elderly in rural and fishing communities.

Accordingly, the Fire Department is implementing tailored measures to minimize casualties and secure the "golden hour" for emergency patients.

First, all ambulances operating throughout Jeonnam will be permanently equipped with eight types of heatwave response equipment, including ice vests, saline glucose, and electrolyte drinks. This measure is intended to provide rapid emergency treatment at the scene, such as immediately lowering body temperature and supplying fluids, in the event of a heat-related illness.

In addition, heatwave response equipment will be additionally loaded onto "Pump-bulls" (fire pump trucks equipped with ambulance gear) that are deployed immediately when ambulances are unavailable. Through this, a comprehensive support network has been established to respond quickly to patients with heat-related illnesses without any gaps in emergency medical services, even if the ambulance in charge is dispatched to another scene.
