Armless ‘Left-Foot Doctor’ Lee Beom-sik Successfully Ascends Mt. Halla’s Baengnokdam
- Departed from Seongpanak at 6:30 AM on the 28th and reached the summit in 6 hours and 10 minutes
- Expressed his sentiments: “Disability is not a limitation, but a standard for new challenges… A summit of hope created together”
- Part of the Korea Hope Road Project “Connecting the Paths,” planned to be utilized as educational content for improving disability awareness
The hope ascent to Mt. Halla’s Baengnokdam, aimed at improving disability awareness, was successfully concluded as part of the Korea Hope Road Project “Connecting the Paths.”
Dr. Lee Beom-sik, known as the “Left-Foot Doctor,” who is a person with a severe disability active as an instructor and author, departed from the entrance of the Seongpanak trail on Mt. Halla at 6:30 AM on the 28th of last month and arrived at the summit of Baengnokdam at 12:40 PM on the same day. This marks an exceptional case of a person with a severe disability, who relies on prosthetic legs due to the absence of both arms, successfully reaching the summit of Mt. Halla. Dr. Lee Beom-sik headed toward Baengnokdam by walking the entire 9.4km Seongpanak course. In particular, the steep rocky section at the summit, located around 1,900m above sea level, was cited as the greatest challenge of this ascent. Under such dire conditions—unable to use equipment like hiking poles due to the absence of both arms and forced to maintain balance solely on prosthetic legs—Dr. Lee moved the audience by demonstrating an unyielding will, such as using his shoulders and entire body to lean on ropes to navigate the rocky section.
Ten members of the Lee Beom-sik Supporters Association, including Chairman Bang Byeong-bae, accompanied him on this ascent to ensure safety and provide on-site support.
“Disability is a new standard for challenges… proving a life of resetting limits”
Upon reaching the summit of Baengnokdam, Dr. Lee shared his thoughts, stating, “Today, I did not merely climb Mt. Halla; I transcended my own internal limits once again.” He added, “Disability is not the end, but a standard for living and challenging oneself in a different way. Anyone who takes on challenges in their own way can reopen even seemingly impossible paths.” He continued, “Today’s ascent is not the result of my own efforts, but a ‘summit of hope’ created together by the sponsoring members who walked with me and everyone who cheered me on,” adding, “I hope this challenge will give someone a reason to live again and the courage to start.”
Dr. Lee Beom-sik’s Path of Hope Project began with a 462km cross-country walking traverse from Gwanghwamun, Seoul to Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province in 2024, followed by a walking traverse from Gwangju to Gyeongju in 2025 to pray for the success of APEC, and a walk from Daegu to Andong in 2026 to pray for the integration of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province. This ascent of Mt. Halla holds symbolic significance in that it marks an expansion from a challenge of walking on flat terrain to one of climbing vertical heights.
The organizers plan to utilize the photos and video materials recorded during this climb to produce various educational video content, including disability awareness education, character education for youth, lectures for public institutions, and documentaries. Meanwhile, the Korea Hope Road Project announced that it plans to continue its social initiatives to promote harmony between regions and bridge the perception gap between people with and without disabilities.
