Citizens' Solidarity Launches Full-Scale Legal Action Over 'Primary Election Allegations'... Files for Preservation of Evidence with Seoul District Court

Also Submits Complaint to National Election Commission... "Transparent Disclosure of Primary Process is Key to Resolving the Situation"... Continues Rally in Front of Democratic Party Gwangju City Chapter for 16th Day, Urging Local Political Leaders to Make a Decision

(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The controversy surrounding alleged "election fraud" in the Democratic Party's primary for the Mayor of Gwangju is escalating into a legal battle.

The Gwangju-Jeonnam Democratic Citizens' Solidarity for Defending National Sovereignty (hereinafter the Citizens' Solidarity) announced on the 4th that it had submitted an application for preservation of evidence to the Seoul Central District Court and filed a complaint with the National Election Commission. This marks the implementation of the judicial action foreshadowed at a previous press conference. Standing Representative Kim Beom-tae, who visited the court in person, expressed his firm determination, stating, “Once the court issues a ruling on the application for preservation of evidence, the true nature of the rigged primary election, which remains a subject of suspicion, will be clearly revealed,” and adding, “We will pursue further legal action depending on the results of the legal verification process.”

Regarding the background of their complaint to the National Election Commission (NEC), the Citizens’ Solidarity emphasized that the spirit of the Public Official Election Act must also be applied to internal party primaries. Representative Kim argued, “Regardless of intent, the principle of election law is that an election is invalid if procedural flaws occur,” asserting, “The truth must be uncovered through the NEC’s judgment and a rigorous investigation by law enforcement agencies.”

In particular, the Citizens’ Solidarity warned of the repercussions this incident could have on the results of future local elections. They pointed out that even if a candidate is elected in the general election, unprecedented chaos involving a re-election could ensue if their candidacy is later invalidated by a court ruling.

Representative Kim urged the Democratic Party leadership, stating, “Representative Jeong Cheong-rae is driving a situation where a problem that could have been solved with a hoe cannot be solved even with a shovel.” He added, “Transparently disclosing the entire runoff voting process is the only way to quell the growing suspicions and voices of refusal to accept the primary election results among the citizens of Gwangju and Jeonnam.”

Meanwhile, the Citizens’ Solidarity escalated its struggle by continuing its rally for the 16th day in front of the Democratic Party’s Gwangju City Chapter at 10 a.m. that day.

At the rally, External Cooperation Committee Chairperson Lee Ju-yeon appealed to local politicians, saying, “Do not be intimidated by unjust power, but step forward boldly to fulfill your historical responsibilities as politicians.”

At the scene of the filing at the Seoul Central District Court that day, Standing Representative Kim Beom-tae, along with Representative Kim Jang-seok of the Mugunghwa Club for the Rule of Law and Democratization and Representative Ahn Ho-jae of the Ahn Byeong-ha Human Rights School, accompanied the group to call for a judicial resolution.
