Meditation is about becoming familiar with non-conceptual experience. It’s important to begin with helpful concepts, such as receiving blessings and cultivating a compassionate motivation, but the main practice should be beyond concepts. In essence, meditation is pure experience untainted by conceptual thinking.
We should begin and end with Bodhichitta—the altruistic motivation—which itself is a concept. However, the actual practice of meditation should be complete openness and freedom, without filters or obstructions. In other words, without thoughts. The essence of meditation is thought-free awareness.
We are so accustomed to thoughts and thinking. Habitual thoughts dominate our lives. We have to free ourselves from the tyranny of conditioned thinking. I’m not referring to thinking that helps us learn something new or to positive thoughts that support the path. The real tyrant is the self-generated, unconscious stream of thoughts driven by karma.
Thought-free experience is the most precious—fresh, alive, genuine, natural, and fulfilling. Yet we rarely experience it. This thought-free awareness is an endless source of goodness, happiness, creativity, strength, and insight.
At first, we may experience only brief gaps of non-conceptuality between thoughts, but gradually those gaps expand, and the power of thought weakens. Meditation is simply to see, hear, smell, taste, breathe, feel, and just be—without concepts. We must learn to walk, eat, work, converse, write, enjoy, and live without thoughts. The thought-free state should be our constant refuge, guide, resting place, and the singular reference point. What joy it is to live free from concepts!
