"A multi-billion dollar set with a single button"… EX Corporation CEO Son Seung-oh's dream of XR popularization

A peculiar phenomenon is occurring in the live commerce field these days. Instead of rearranging physical sets whenever a product category changes, the background viewed by the camera is replaced with the push of a button. While the camera captures the actual space, the space unfolding beyond it is digital. The boundary between the physical and the digital is quietly blurring in the broadcast environment.

EX Corporation, an integrated solution company that lowers the entry barriers to virtual production, is declaring its evolution from a solution to a platform based on these changes.

EX Corporation is behind this transformation. As a startup developing integrated XR solutions, it has accumulated six registered patents related to virtual production since its founding in 2020. It has established technological partnerships with Aximmetry in Hungary, RETracker in the UK, and Moverse AI in Greece, and has been named a member of the Nvidia Inception program. Its in-house studio in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, 'EX STUDIO,' was selected as a VP Agreement Studio by the Gyeonggi Content Agency for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025.

Founder and CEO Son Seung-oh is closer to a field-experienced practitioner than a tech entrepreneur. He started as a stage video director (VJ) in 2009 and went on to serve as a producer and then a technical director. We asked why someone who spent about 17 years traversing the fields of broadcasting, performance, and exhibition founded a startup, and where EX Corporation is currently headed.

EX Corporation (EX Corporation) CEO Son Seung-oh

Integrated structure with lowered entry barriers… Changes in XR production methods

In 2020, when the pandemic brought performances and exhibitions to a standstill, industry insiders began seeking a way out through real-time rendering-based content. CEO Son was looking in the same direction. However, when he actually set out to put it into action, the reality was different.

“Setting up a broadcast-standard virtual studio costs billions of won just for construction, and even if camera tracking, rendering engines, and media servers were purchased separately from distributors, accessibility was difficult due to technical support and costs. Production was also challenging because creating content even once entails massive expenses.”

The virtual production technology itself already existed. What was missing was not the technology, but a realistic pathway to access it. CEO Son sought out and contacted overseas teams grappling with similar concerns, and began building the system himself by combining their components one by one.

It was the belief that he could create a “system that is much cheaper but produces no significant difference in results.” Looking back on that time, he said, “Looking back now, I was truly reckless to start a business based solely on that belief.”

However, solutions created by those who have personally experienced inefficiency in the field carry a different character. The company name EX Corporation (EX) reflects this direction. It stands for EXperience EXtend, meaning to expand experience.

The problem in the virtual production field was not a lack of technology. It was a structure where different equipment was not connected. Camera tracking was handled by Company A, rendering by Company B, and the media server by Company C. While each was excellent on its own, integrating them into a single pipeline required enormous costs and time.

EX Corporation's EXLINK unifies this fragmented structure. It connects Aximmetry-based VP software with RETracker-based camera tracking, enabling various hardware to operate within a single workflow. The changes extend beyond simple cost reduction. Integration time is reduced, and even non-experts can operate in an automated environment with just a few button presses.

EX Corporation does not stop here. It is expanding to general users and small-scale creators through EX-EZ, which further lowers the entry barrier of EXLINK. Designed to enable the production of XR content in a near-unmanned environment, this system is the next step toward the "popularization of XR."

“Initially, we created this system for our own use, but as requests continued from the field, it naturally expanded into B2B.”

Ultimately, EX Corporation's starting point was not technology, but problems in the field. And in the process of solving those problems, a market was created.

EX Corporation also holds six registered patents related to virtual production. 'Multiple Stereo Camera Positioning Technology Based on 6DOF and SLAM' (Registered Patent No. 10-2666600) combines a 6-axis DOF sensor and SLAM technology to precisely track the position and orientation of a camera. 'Multi-Tracking Camera System Based on Virtual Studio Composite Sensor' (Registered Patent No. 10-2453561) utilizes an IMU and a Depth camera to effectively control camera movement in a virtual studio environment.

The value perceived by customers is simpler than technical specifications. Even when multiple cameras move freely within a virtual space, the alignment between the background and the subject is maintained in real time. This means that a finished video is produced immediately without the need for separate post-production work.

However, the basis for CEO Son’s claim that competitors find it difficult to replicate is not patents. He states, “Individual tracking or synthesis technologies may exist separately, but making them operate organically within a single solution and combining them with know-how verified at around 20 sites over four years is not easily copied.” In other words, patents are proof of technology, and the real barrier is the operational experience built upon it.

XR Expanding Across Industries… Applications Reach Retail, Education, and Performing Arts

EX Corporation's client base is not confined to a single industry. It spans across retail, culture and arts, and education, including GS Retail home shopping broadcasts, Naver Shopping Live's live commerce, the Jaraseom Jazz Festival, solution supply to Sungkyunkwan University, Dongseo University, and the Chung-Ang Cyber Lifelong Education Center, and an MOU with Kaywon Art University.

At the GS Retail site, EX Corporation's RETracker Bliss and Fizz products were mounted on the jib camera. Instead of redecorating the physical set every time the product changed, virtual backgrounds are switched in real-time. Since the spatial staging for multiple categories can be changed instantly within a single broadcast, production time and set costs have been reduced.

CEO Son states, “We have proven in the field that XR is not merely a refresh of the screen in live commerce, but can simultaneously achieve improved production efficiency and differentiated branding.” However, EX Corporation explains that quantitative metrics such as engagement and conversion rates are “difficult to disclose publicly as they are the client’s business data.”

Among the various references, CEO Son sees the fastest potential for commercialization in education. The government's digital education transition policy is creating structural demand, and above all, it generates recurring revenue.

While retail and culture & arts often end on a project-by-project basis, education requires continuous content creation on a semester basis. Once a studio is introduced, it is utilized every semester.

The experience of signing an MOU with Kaywon Art University and jointly supporting special lectures and student artwork production is the basis for this judgment.

Filming in progress at an XR virtual production studio. It shows a production environment where digital backgrounds are composited onto real-world spaces in real time.

EX STUDIO in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, is more than just a filming space. CEO Son explains that it serves three roles simultaneously. It is an R&D space for testing new technology prototypes in real-world environments, as well as a customer validation device that collects on-site feedback while conducting actual production with companies such as Hyundai Motor and KG Edu.

For potential customers and investors, it acts as a sales tool that demonstrates capabilities through experience rather than words.

“We are receiving high satisfaction ratings for our technical support and troubleshooting. This is because we provide the exact know-how we have accumulated while creating content ourselves.”

The generative AI background generation and AI DMX lighting synchronization, which are core features of EX-EZ, also originated in this space. The fact that it was selected as a VP agreement studio by the Gyeonggi Content Agency for consecutive years in 2024 and 2025 is also proof that this space is not merely a rental facility.

In December 2024, EX Corporation announced a collaboration with Moverse AI of Greece. It is a markerless motion capture solution that captures 3D character animations in real-time without markers or suits and converts them into FBX files. CEO Son, who is well aware of how painful the cleanup work typically entails after motion capture, cited Moverse AI's AI-based reprocessing as a key advantage.

While the existing EXLINK solved the problem of “virtual space seen by a camera,” this collaboration is an expansion into the realm where “human movement interacts with virtual space in real time.” The goal is a workflow that handles everything from motion tracking to real-time synthesis and transmission in one go by natively integrating the motion capture engine into the EXLINK and EX-EZ pipelines.

Virtual YouTubers, live performances, and educational simulations are the categories targeted by this pipeline. In fact, we confirmed the potential by operating booths where visitors could experience the products firsthand at the KOBA and Future Show exhibitions, and this positive response served as a decisive turning point that elevated the relationship from a simple distributorship to joint development.

From Demo to Platform… Designing a Recurring Revenue Structure

When asked how he defines global competitiveness, CEO Son flatly states that it is neither technical specifications nor price.

Because players with large capital can raise their technological level at any time. Price competition is also not sustainable.

The relationship EX Corporation maintains with Aximmetry, RETracker, and Moverse AI is not a supply contract. It is a technical collaboration in which inconveniences and bugs discovered while using the solutions firsthand are continuously shared through communication channels. From the partner companies' perspective, feedback from the teams actually using the solutions in the field is different. CEO Son believes that the relationships and experience built in this way cannot be bought with capital all at once.

EX STUDIO located in Hanam, Gyeonggi-do

For a long time, the XR industry has been plagued by the saying, “There are many cool demos, but the recurring revenue structure is weak.” CEO Son does not deny this either.

Currently, EX Corporation's B2B project-based sales account for over 80% of its total revenue.

The plan to change this structure

is in two stages.

Phase 1

involves incorporating EX-EZ-based space rental and subscription models alongside the current B2B EXLINK solution delivery. This stabilizes cash flow through project-based revenue while planting the seeds for subscription-based sales.

Phase 2

is the franchise business for EX-EZ unmanned studios. It involves expanding small XR booths with accessibility comparable to coin karaoke booths, similar to 'Insaeng 4-cut,' and establishing a recurring revenue structure through franchise fees, system setup costs, and monthly maintenance royalties.

The goal is to increase the share of solution and subscription revenue to over 50% by 2028.

“Introducing a system is like fastening the first button; recurring revenue is generated only when what to create and how to use it are resolved simultaneously. We are finding those answers by producing content ourselves.”

A platform is a result, not a declaration… The method of proof chosen by EX Corporation

EX Corporation ultimately aims to become a platform company. If it remains a content production company, it must generate new revenue for every project; if it stays solely a solution company, it becomes trapped in the linear growth of equipment sales. The vision CEO Son envisions is a “platform where anyone can create, distribute, and monetize XR content.”

However, this does not mean that all three identities can be achieved simultaneously.

Platform trust begins with the technical capabilities of the solution, and proof of that technical capability comes from content references.

From content to solutions, and from solutions to platforms. This means there is a specific sequence in which layers are built. Just as EXLINK started from internal needs and expanded into B2B, EX-EZ is designing a structure where a creator ecosystem naturally forms around production tools.

When asked what he wanted to prove within the next two to three years, CEO Son's answer was clear.

It is proving through customer references that

“

XR is not just for experts.”

It is not about technological superiority or overseas expansion. It is about short-form creators' videos going viral at the EX-EZ booth, live commerce sellers generating actual sales using that background, and educational institutions officially incorporating it into their curricula. CEO Son believes that as such cases accumulate, technological superiority and overseas expansion will naturally follow.

EX Corporation's next reference will be the answer to how far a solution created by someone who has personally experienced inefficiency in the field can go.
