"Envisioning the Future in a New Environment"… Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Launches 'Youth Gap Year' in Earnest

30 Unemployed Youths Selected to Conduct Projects on Their Own for 30 Days in Domestic Regions Outside of Gwangju - Full Support Including Activity Allowances of Up to 1.4 Million Won Per Person, Expert Consulting, and Mentoring

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The journey of the 'Youth Gap Year,' in which young people in Gwangju step away from familiar environments to find direction in life amidst new challenges, has officially begun.

Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City announced that it held an inauguration ceremony on the 8th at the Mudeung Hall of the Gwangju Government Complex with participants of the '2026 Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Youth Gap Year Support Project.'

The 'Youth Gap Year' is a representative youth-tailored policy of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City designed to help unemployed youth gain diverse experiences while proactively exploring and designing their career paths. Since the first results were unveiled in 2023, a total of 110 young people from Gwangju have participated through last year, receiving a great response.

This year's project involves 30 unemployed young people aged 19 to 39 from the Gwangju region, who were ultimately selected through an open recruitment process. The young people attending the launch ceremony shared the purpose and direction of the project and took time to present their individual projects and ambitious aspirations.

The young people participating in this cohort planned their projects independently by choosing one of two types: the "Career Exploration Type," which involves in-depth exploration of their career interests, or the "Social Exploration Type," which involves deep examination of social values and local issues. Based on their individual plans, they will leave Gwangju and stay in other regions of Korea for 30 days to carry out challenging tasks for their future.

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City has prepared robust support measures to ensure that the young people can stably immerse themselves in their projects. Up to 1.4 million won in project activity funds will be provided to each participating youth. In addition, the program plans to support their growth through various means, including one-on-one professional consulting, career and job exploration training, and mentoring by working professionals.

Having completed a challenging and valuable journey of approximately two months, the youth plan to share their experiences of challenge and achievements with one another at a performance sharing event this coming September.

An official from the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City stated, "We hope this Youth Gap Year program will serve as a turning point for our region's youth to broaden their horizons and grow to the next level," adding, "We will provide unsparing support so that young people can proactively design their futures."
