Sancheong County Saves Honeybees with Data… Overcoming Beekeeping Crisis with ‘Smart Hibernation Ark’
Overwintering Mortality Rate Reduced from Up to 60% to 11%
Sancheong County has presented a new solution to the beekeeping industry facing a crisis by successfully conducting a data-based experiment on honeybee overwintering.
On the 30th, Sancheong County held a completion report meeting for the ‘Smart Village Demonstration Project for Acquiring Data on Maintaining Honeybee Hibernation’ at the Agricultural Technology Center and unveiled the demonstration results.
This project was implemented as part of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Smart Village dissemination program to address recurring damage to honeybees caused by abnormal climate, pests and diseases, and Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
The demonstration project was conducted in the Byeongjeong-ri area of Sancheong-eup, with participation from companies specializing in smart beehives and IoT, research institutions, and the Sancheong County Branch of the Korea Beekeeping Association. With a total investment of 950 million won, the project focused on managing the overwintering environment using data rather than experience. The military collected and analyzed over 750,000 data points regarding temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, weight, and colony status by utilizing four cold storage-type overwintering facilities, precision sensors, air conditioning systems, and smart beehives. As a result, they confirmed that the internal temperature could be stably maintained between 1.5 and 4°C despite fluctuations in external temperatures.
Significant results were also observed in phased experiments. The first experiment confirmed that colony viability declines when winter bee formation is insufficient, while the second experiment showed that the mortality rate decreased from 60% to 20% when overwintering facilities were applied.
Subsequently, in the third experiment, the mortality rate of the cold storage-treated colony dropped to 11%, proving the effectiveness of data-driven environmental control.
The rate of reduction in colony vigor was also 13.2% for the cold-treated colony, which was more than half lower than that of the outdoor overwintering colony (28.9%).
Regarding dead swarms, the outdoor colony recorded approximately 280 dead swarms per colony, whereas the overwintering-treated colony recorded only about 40. This analysis suggests that a low-temperature environment and precise management significantly reduced energy consumption and stress in honeybees.
Based on this achievement, Sancheong County plans to further develop the ‘Smart Honeybee Hibernation Ark’ model and pursue securing patents for core technologies, including environmental control data and hibernation analysis algorithms.
A county official stated, “The success of the ICT-based artificial hibernation experiment marks a critical turning point in responding to the crisis facing the honeybee ecosystem,” adding, “We will strive to expand this model nationwide as a leader in the scientific advancement and standardization of the beekeeping industry.”
