Sacheon City Expands Distribution of ‘Dry Paddy Harrowing’ Cultivation Technique
Expected Reduction in Labor and Production Costs… Also Benefits from Carbon Emission Reduction
Sacheon City announced that it has begun distributing the ‘dry paddy harrowing’ cultivation technique, which can reduce labor and production costs during rice cultivation while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
With support from the Technical Support Division of the National Institute of Food Science and Technology, the city is currently implementing the ‘Project to Establish a Dry Paddy Harrowing Cultivation Complex for Labor Distribution and Production Cost Reduction.’ The first round of transplanting has been completed at the cultivation complex in the Seopo-myeon area, and the city plans to proceed with the application of the technique and transplanting work for the second round at the end of this month.
‘Dry paddy harrowing’ is a method of leveling and flattening the soil in a paddy field without flooding it, and then supplying water just before transplanting. It is expected to reduce labor costs as it can cut the work period by about half compared to traditional wet paddy harrowing.
Furthermore, it is evaluated as helping to reduce carbon dioxide and methane gas emissions by decreasing the frequency of agricultural machinery operation, and having a positive effect on protecting river ecosystems by reducing the runoff of muddy water. On the 13th, Lee Seung-gyu, an instructor at the National Institute of Food Science and Technology, visited the site to inspect the application of the technology and provided on-site guidance to farmers.
Sacheon City plans to enhance agricultural competitiveness by expanding the dissemination of eco-friendly and low-cost rice cultivation technologies.
