Intensive management of 70 priority projects (383.6 billion won), including future industries such as AI, semiconductors, and energy; scheduled to hold a budget policy consultation meeting with Democratic Party lawmakers from the Integrated City Chapter at the National Assembly on the 30th.
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Jeonnam Gwangju Special City has launched an all-out effort to secure government funding for key projects that will lead the region's future growth, such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and energy.
On the 29th, Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Jeonnam Gwangju Special City, presided over a ‘Strategy Meeting for Securing State Budget’ in the small conference room of the Gwangju Government Complex and intensively reviewed response strategies to reflect major core projects in the government budget proposal.
The Integrated Jeonnam Gwangju Special City has proposed a total of 1,676 projects for state funding for 2027, amounting to 13.664 trillion won. The city selected a total of 70 projects worth 383.6 billion won as priority management targets after comprehensively reviewing factors such as project urgency, alignment with government policies, and ripple effects on the local economy. Based on this, the city plans to actively propose the inclusion of national funding to central government ministries and the Ministry of Planning and Budget.
At the strategic meeting held on this day, focusing on the 70 priority management projects across 15 departments and bureaus, the meeting shared the status of funding allocation by central governments, reasons for non-adoption, and trends in deliberations by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, while exploring customized response measures for each project.
Major projects by sector include: 30 projects in advanced future industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and energy; 4 projects to overcome crises in the petrochemical and steel industries; 9 projects to strengthen the competitiveness of agriculture and fisheries; 7 projects for the expansion of social infrastructure (SOC); 12 projects for the revitalization of culture and tourism; and 8 projects for citizen safety and welfare.
Under the responsibility of their respective directors, each bureau and department plans to visit their respective ministries in person during August, prior to the Ministry of Planning and Budget's finalization of the government budget proposal, to explain the necessity of their projects and the effectiveness of their policies. The plan is to manage projects already reflected in the central government budget proposals without disruption until final confirmation, while reinforcing the rationale for addressing issues regarding projects not yet included. The entire bureau and department will act as a single team to make an all-out effort until the proposal is finalized.
The cooperation framework between the ruling party and the government will also be strengthened. On the 30th, Mayor Min Hyung-bae will hold a budget policy consultation meeting at the National Assembly with lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea's Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated City Chapter. At this meeting, they will share the current status of central government reflections and progress, and discuss specific cooperation measures to ensure the inclusion of the Integrated Special City's major projects in the government budget proposal. Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City, emphasized, “Securing state funding is essential for the stable settlement of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City and the establishment of a foundation for future growth.” He added, “We will closely monitor the deliberations of the Ministry of Planning and Budget and promptly share the status of responses for each project. At the same time, we will actively utilize the Democratic Party’s Budget Policy Consultative Council and the cooperative system with local lawmakers to devote all our efforts to securing the budget for key projects until the government budget proposal is finalized.”
