"Run, Peace Train"... Seo-gu, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, DMZ Peace Tour with Over 330 Residents

Operation of the 'Good Seo-gu Peace Train' to Commemorate the 81st Anniversary of Liberation Day and the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Japanese Military 'Comfort Women'. Diverse programs including special lectures on unification and musicals on board... Tours of Dora Observatory and the Third Tunnel.

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Seo-gu, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, operated the 'Good Seo-gu Peace Train' with over 330 local residents to reflect on the pain of division and the preciousness of peace, in commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of Liberation Day and the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' (August 14).

This event was planned to allow residents to personally visit historical sites they had previously only encountered through textbooks or media, experience the reality of the division between the North and South, and share the aspirations of the times for peaceful unification.

The dedicated carriage of the Peace Train, which departed from Gwangju Songjeong Station on the morning of the 14th, was transformed into a moving "Peace and History Learning Center." Seo-gu organized a variety of participatory programs to ensure participants could learn the value of peace without a moment of boredom during the journey.

Participants recorded their individual wishes for peace and unification through "Boarding Pass Postcard Writing," which will be delivered to themselves or their families one year later. Additionally, work was carried out on the coloring art wall "Peace Drawn Together," a project planned in collaboration with Honam University's RICE partnership. This artwork, a collaboration between the local university, the Seo-gu Youth Culture Center, and the Peace Train participants, encapsulates the aspirations of Seo-gu residents for peace. Seo-gu plans to display the artwork in key locations within the district to promote a culture of peace.

In addition to these activities, the train hosted a memorial service for the Day of Remembrance for Comfort Women Victims, a special lecture on unification by an expert, and a fusion musical performance conveying a message of peace, all of which received an enthusiastic response from the residents. Upon arriving at their destination, Imjingang Station, the tour group toured key sites within the Civilian Control Zone (CCZ), including the Third Tunnel, Dora Observatory, and Tongilchon, under the guidance of a DMZ expert. Looking out at the North Korean land that seemed close enough to touch, the participants witnessed firsthand the Cold War reality of division.

One resident who participated with their children commented, "It was meaningful to be able to show my children vivid history by visiting sites in the DMZ that are usually difficult to access," adding, "It was a special opportunity for my whole family to deeply reflect on why unification is necessary."

Seo-gu District Mayor Kim Yi-kang stated, "It is deeply moving to stand together with residents at the site of division on this historically significant day and pledge for peace," adding, "I hope this Peace Train does not stop at a simple site visit, but becomes a seed that shares the values of peace and coexistence in the daily lives of the residents."
