Changwon National University Sweeps 'GSAT 2026'... Wins Grand Prize for Waste Resource Recovery and AI Predictive Maintenance Technology

VitaMn Team Wins Gyeongsangnam-do Governor's Award for Battery Material Recovery Technology Utilizing Waste Manganese

Changwon National University proved itself to be a breeding ground for "Young Entrepreneurs" who will innovate the regional industrial ecosystem by sweeping the Grand Prize and Excellence Awards at "GSAT 2026," Gyeongnam's largest startup festival.

Changwon National University announced that participating teams swept the major awards at the "2026 GSAT Young Startup Camp Competition," held at the Changwon Convention Center (CECO) on the 4th, receiving recognition for their unrivaled technological capabilities and business potential.

In this competition, the VitaMn team (Grand Prize, Gyeongsangnam-do Governor's Award) focused on "waste manganese dust," a major headache in industrial sites. They showcased a process technology that recovers manganese sulfate, a key material for secondary batteries, from industrial byproducts by utilizing a Vitamin C-based reduction reaction.

This technology received high praise from the judges for presenting a model of a "Circular Economy" that transforms discarded dust into high-value-added resources. In particular, they were highly commended for addressing the demands of the times—such as the localization of battery materials and the realization of carbon neutrality—through the creative perspective unique to university students.

The Zerostop team, which won the Excellence Award (awarded the Korea Entrepreneurship Education Council President's Award), accurately identified the pain points of manufacturing sites, which are the mainstay of the Changwon National Industrial Complex. They developed a "Predictive Maintenance Kit" that predicts equipment failures in advance and prevents sudden downtime.

Designed with the highest priority on practical applicability as well as technical feasibility, this kit is expected to pave the way for small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt smart factory processes at a low cost. This achievement is the result of systematic education provided by the ‘Gyeongnam Entrepreneurship Sharing University,’ which is organized by Gyeongsangnam-do and linked to RISE (Regional Innovation Center University Support System). The close support, ranging from business model (BM) refinement to practical IR pitching, boosted the students' capabilities.

An official from Changwon National University stated, “The purpose of this competition was to strengthen students’ practical business capabilities through CORN-based entrepreneurship education and IR pitching.” He emphasized, “We plan to continue expanding practical entrepreneurship education linked to local industries to discover outstanding entrepreneurial talent and contribute to the revitalization of the startup ecosystem.”

Meanwhile, as the lead university of the G-SCOUT Consortium, Changwon National University oversees program planning and operation and serves as a regional hub for entrepreneurship education based on collaboration among participating universities. The university plans to continuously promote the connection to startup commercialization through follow-up support for the winning teams.
