Six Civic Groups in Gwangju and Jeonnam to Hold Press Conference on Current Affairs on the 27th… Demand to "Stop Undermining Judicial Independence and the Market Economy"

Statement to be Announced at Gwangju City Council at 2 PM… Calls for Withdrawal of the 'Special Prosecutor Bill to Drop Indictments Against President Lee Jae-myung' and Condemns Political Pressure Regarding the 'Starbucks Incident'

(Break News Gwangju/Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Six civic and youth organizations from the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions—including the National Alliance for National Defense, Friends of the Honam Right, the Honam Branch of the Korea-America Alliance, the Honam Freedom Forum, the Pan-Citizens' Solidarity for the Abolition of the Jeong Yul-seong Park Construction, and the Honam Branch of the National Professors' Association for Social Justice—will hold a joint press conference on the upcoming 27th at 2 PM in the Citizens' Communication Room on the first floor of the Gwangju City Council.

Through this press conference, these groups plan to announce the joint position of local civil society regarding the Special Prosecutor Bill concerning President Lee Jae-myung, recently proposed by the political sphere, and the so-called 'Starbucks Incident.'

In a press conference statement distributed in advance, civic groups emphasized that "the Republic of Korea is a nation built upon liberal democracy, a market economy, and the rule of law," and strongly criticized the government and the ruling party, stating, "The series of recent behaviors displayed by the government and the ruling party appears to be an unprecedented and dangerous attempt to shake the constitutional order and place the judicial system under political power." They further explained the purpose of the press conference, declaring, "We express deep concern over this trend and will stand strongly against it together with the people."

In particular, they strongly condemned the excessive political pressure exerted by the government and the ruling party regarding the recently surfaced "Starbucks Korea" controversy. The groups argued, "The sight of the President and ruling party officials personally stepping forward to publicly criticize the company and extending pressure for boycotts and expulsion simply because a controversy over a specific advertising slogan arose is behavior that can never be tolerated in a liberal democratic nation based on a free market economy."

At the press conference held today, the six groups plan to strongly demand four specific points from the government and the ruling party. The main demands include: ▲ the immediate withdrawal of the ‘Special Prosecutor Act for the Investigation of Fabricated Indictments’; ▲ the immediate cessation of political pressure and incitement to boycott Starbucks; ▲ the cessation of the use of the Constitution and laws for political purposes; and ▲ the cessation of undermining liberal democracy, the market economy, and judicial independence.

Meanwhile, civic groups in Gwangju and Jeonnam, including the ‘Pan-Citizens’ Alliance for the Abolition of the Jeong Yul-seong Park Construction’ which spearheaded this press conference, have been continuing active conservative civic movements in the region, such as holding a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council last February to oppose Chinese Ambassador to Korea Dai Ning’s request to restore the bust of Jeong Yul-seong.
