Gwangju Bank Donates 100 Million Won to Successfully Host ‘2026 16th Gwangju Biennale’
Cumulative Donations Reach 6.2 Billion Won… Leading the Revitalization of the Local Culture and Arts Ecosystem
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Bank is continuing its sustained mutual growth initiatives by donating 100 million won to ensure the successful hosting of the Gwangju Biennale, which has established itself as a representative regional culture and arts festival and a world-class contemporary art biennale.
Gwangju Bank (President Jeong Il-seon) announced on the 21st that it held the ‘2026 16th Gwangju Biennale Donation Ceremony’ at the Gwangju Government Complex of the Integrated Gwangju Metropolitan City and donated 100 million won to the Gwangju Biennale Foundation. Key figures, including Gwangju Bank President Jeong Il-seon, Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City Vice Mayor Ko Gwang-wan, Gwangju Biennale Foundation Representative Yoon Beom-mo, and Gwangju Bank Vice President Kang Ji-hoon, attended the handover ceremony to express their shared commitment to collaboration for the revitalization of the local culture and arts ecosystem and the successful preparation of the event.
This sponsorship was planned to solidify the foundation for the sustainable growth of local culture and arts and to strengthen the status of the Gwangju Biennale, which leads discourse in global contemporary art. Since its inception in 1995, the Gwangju Biennale has grown into a representative international art event of Korea and has served as a core cultural platform conveying Gwangju's historical identity and artistic value to the world.
Gwangju Bank has contributed to the development of local culture and arts by participating as a major sponsor without fail since the first Gwangju Biennale was held in 1995. The bank has taken the lead in boosting the pride of Gwangju and Jeonnam, known as the "Land of Arts," by providing multifaceted support for major local mega-events and traditional culture and arts projects, including not only the Biennale but also the Gwangju Design Biennale, the Jeonnam International Ink Painting Biennale, the Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo, and the Im Bang-ul Traditional Music Festival.
In particular, the cumulative sponsorship funds donated by Gwangju Bank to the two events—the Gwangju Biennale and the Gwangju Design Biennale—to date, including this latest delivery, amount to a total of 6.2 billion won. This is recognized as an exemplary case of long-term, sincere Mecenat activity aimed at fostering the region's cultural assets, going beyond one-off donations.
Jeong Il-seon, President of Gwangju Bank, stated, "The Gwangju Biennale is a valuable asset that goes beyond a simple art exhibition to showcase Gwangju's cultural identity and creative values on the world stage." He added, "Based on our sense of mission as the region's representative financial institution, we will continue to provide unsparing support not only for the development of local culture and arts but also to enable local residents to enjoy rich culture in their daily lives." Meanwhile, in addition to supporting the culture and arts sectors, Gwangju Bank is devoting its full efforts to realizing the values of inclusive finance and mutual growth by carrying out a wide range of social contribution activities, including scholarship programs to foster local talent, social welfare programs for the underprivileged, and sports promotion activities, thereby growing together with the local community.
