In the wake of the flood disaster, the metropolitan and provincial councils of the Yeongnam and Honam regions joined hands to go beyond simply delivering donations and actively participate in on-site recovery efforts. Following the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council's visit to the Gyeongnam Provincial Council to deliver approximately 15 million won in disaster relief funds, council members and staff traveled to the affected areas in Tongyeong to directly participate in recovery work.

The Gyeongnam Provincial Council announced on the 26th that Song Hyeong-gon, Chairman of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council, and other council members visited the Provincial Council to deliver 15.45 million won in disaster relief funds for flood victims in the Gyeongnam region.

This support went beyond a simple visit between councils or the donation of funds.

On the same day, approximately 40 members and staff from the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council traveled to Sanyang-eup, Tongyeong, and directly participated in recovery work, including clearing debris from the flooded areas and cleaning up the surrounding environment. Recently, as the Gyeongnam Provincial Council has been carrying out recovery activities by standing committee in the disaster-stricken areas of Geoje and Tongyeong, a provincial council from another region visited Gyeongnam to lend its support to the disaster response.

In particular, this is significant in that the councils of the Yeongnam and Honam regions have used the disaster as a catalyst to broaden the scope of mutual cooperation, moving beyond the one-time relationship of provider and recipient. This is because, in a situation where large-scale natural disasters are recurring regardless of administrative boundaries, there is a growing need for disaster cooperation among local councils to be expanded to a field-oriented approach.

The relief funds delivered on this day will be used for the recovery and relief activities of flood victims through the Gyeongnam branch of the Korean Red Cross.

Attendees at the donation ceremony from the Gyeongnam Provincial Council included Chairman Park Jun, Vice Chairman Shin Jong-cheol, Representative Kim Kyung-soo of the Democratic Party of Korea, Education Committee Chairman Jung Jae-wook, Agriculture, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Committee Chairman Lee Kyung-jae, Construction and Firefighting Committee Chairman Jung Sang-hak, and Council Member Kang Seong-jung. The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Council was represented by Chairman Song Hyeong-gon, Vice Chairman Cho Seok-ho, Council Operations Committee Chair Shin Min-ho, Safety and Construction Committee Chair Kang Jeong-il, Culture, Tourism and Sports Committee Chair Hong Gi-wol, Spokesperson Kim Jin-nam, and Senior Deputy Spokesperson Lee Sook-hee.

Chairman Park Jun stated, “The sincerity and action demonstrated this time will be a great comfort to the residents of the province who are going through difficult times due to the flood damage,” adding, “We will further expand mutual prosperity and cooperation between the Yeongnam and Honam regions to become a council that overcomes regional difficulties together.”

This exchange differed from previous visits of consolation between agencies in that monetary donations were provided to the affected residents, while manpower was directly contributed to the recovery sites. Attention is now focused on whether this can lead to a cooperative model that links manpower and support between metropolitan councils, moving a step beyond the current regional approach of responding to disasters on a local basis.
