SK Hynix Executives Inspect Gwangju Military Airport Site… ‘Honam Region Semiconductor Cluster’ Takes Shape
President Yeom Seong-jin and Others Inspect Site from Military Airport Control Tower… Focused Discussions on Core Infrastructure Including Site, Power, and Water Supply
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju is accelerating its steps toward establishing a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region.
The Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju announced on the 24th that SK Hynix executives visited the Gwangju Military Airport to personally inspect the site and surrounding conditions, and to finalize discussions on cooperation for the successful promotion of the Honam region semiconductor cluster.
The site visit was attended by key SK Hynix officials, including President Yeom Seong-jin (Head of Communications), Vice Presidents Hwang Mu-yeon and Park Ho-hyun, as well as Kim Ki-hong, Head of the Semiconductor Industry Support Group of the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju.
In the morning, the SK Hynix delegation climbed the control tower at the Gwangju Military Airport to personally inspect the airport site and nearby location conditions, conducting an on-site survey for the establishment of a future semiconductor production base. Following this, they moved to the Gwangju Government Complex of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City and held an informal discussion and luncheon meeting with city officials, including Vice Mayor for Safety and Public Welfare Ko Gwang-wan. At this gathering, both sides discussed various directions for cooperation, including infrastructure, site conditions, and corporate support measures for promoting the semiconductor cluster.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City and SK Hynix have been reviewing the region's site conditions and industrial base through continuous exchanges between management and working-level staff. In particular, as site visits and working-level consultations have been repeated, discussions are moving beyond the conceptual stage and becoming more concrete, focusing on core infrastructure essential for the construction and operation of a semiconductor fabrication plant (FAB), such as land, electricity, and water supply.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City plans to take a preemptive approach in line with the government's policy of rapidly promoting the semiconductor cluster in the Honam region. It plans to establish key infrastructure conditions in advance so that construction can begin immediately upon the company deciding to invest, while simultaneously conducting consultations with the government and relevant agencies. SK Hynix President Yeom Seong-jin stated, “Through this visit, we personally inspected the on-site conditions around the Gwangju Military Airport and exchanged various opinions with the local community.” He added, “We will continue to communicate and cooperate with the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City to ensure the successful implementation of the Honam Semiconductor Cluster.”
Ko Gwang-wan, Vice Mayor for Safety and Public Welfare, assessed, “The fact that SK Hynix executives and working-level staff have repeatedly inspected the site and continued consultations signifies that the establishment of the Honam Semiconductor Cluster has entered a concrete implementation phase involving the assessment of actual on-site conditions.”
Vice Mayor Ko further emphasized, “As the President has stressed a ‘blitzkrieg faster than a speed campaign,’ we will prepare one step ahead rather than waiting for corporate investment decisions.” He added, “We will secure key conditions such as land, electricity, and water supply early on and cooperate actively with the government to ensure there are no obstacles to corporate investment.”
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City plans to foster the Honam Semiconductor Cluster as a new growth axis for Korea's semiconductor industry by ensuring the seamless preparation of infrastructure and corporate support conditions based on close communication with major semiconductor companies, including SK Hynix.
