A shareholder group opposing Samsung Electronics’ labor union has announced a counter rally near Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s residence, as the union prepares for a general strike demonstration at the same location.
According to the shareholder group on Sunday, which has consistently opposed union activities at Samsung Electronics, it filed a police report to hold a rally from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on May 21 near Lee’s home in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul.
The move comes in response to the Samsung Electronics union’s plan to stage a rally at 1 p.m. the same day at the chairman’s residence to announce its general strike plan.
The reported number of participants for the shareholder rally is around 30.
The shareholder group previously voiced its opposition on April 23, when the Samsung Electronics union held a large-scale rally of about 40,000 participants at its Pyeongtaek campus, arguing that excessive union demands infringe on shareholder property rights.
