With the general strike announced by Samsung Electronics’ union now just two days away, the company has notified the union that 7,087 workers will need to be deployed during the strike.
Samsung Electronics sent an official letter today (May 19) to the Samsung Electronics Branch of the Samsung Group Inter-Enterprise Labor Union, stating that “during the period of industrial action from May 21 through June 7, we plan to draw up daily work schedules within the required headcount per department so that safety operations and security work can be maintained and run normally.”
This follows a ruling yesterday (May 18) by the Suwon District Court, which partially granted Samsung Electronics’ application for a provisional injunction to prohibit unlawful industrial action filed against the Inter-Enterprise Labor Union and the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union.
The court acknowledged that all facilities and operations claimed by Samsung Electronics fell under safety protection facilities and security work. Accordingly, it ruled that even during the period of industrial action, safety operations and security work must be maintained at the same level of staffing, operational scale, and duty of care as under normal conditions.
Samsung Electronics accordingly notified the union that a total of 7,087 operational personnel would be required on a daily basis during the general strike, comprising 2,396 workers for safety operations and 4,691 workers for security work.
Samsung Electronics asked the union to “guide members who have been notified of their schedules to report to work normally and carry out their safety operations and security work duties.”
In response, the union said, “The number of personnel has not been specified by each section,” and demanded that “detailed materials specifying the headcount per section in enough detail to allow direction of union members be sent to us.”
The union also called for “non-union members to be given priority in the assignment process for workers who are unable to participate in the industrial action, so as to minimize the number of members whose fundamental rights are restricted,” adding that “the inter-enterprise union will direct the union members whose right to engage in industrial action is restricted to follow management’s operational instructions during the dispute period.”
