Sheep parade in the Tatra Mountains
People watch as sheep with shepherds are led to mountain pastures during the spring sheep drive (redyk) to Gorna Rowien Krupowa in southern Poland, 02 May 2026 (issued 03 May 2026). Redyk, which takes place in the Tatra Mountains every spring, was in the past a treasured event, considered one of the most important annual festivals in the local shepherds' culture. It was accompanied by festivities, prayers, music, and magical rites meant to protect the animals and their owners. During the contemporary redyk, it often happens that the herds must pass along roads on the outskirts of local towns - the streets are then completely blocked as hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of sheep move along their traditional route.
