Olympus Korea, KSGO partner to expand laparoscopic training for residents

Olympus Korea, a medical device company, said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (KSGO) to develop and operate a laparoscopic training program for obstetrics and gynecology (ob-gyn) residents.

The signing ceremony was held on Saturday at the Lotte Hotel Busan, attended by officials from both organizations, who pledged to collaborate to enhance residents’ practical competencies and improve the quality of healthcare services in Korea.

The agreement aims to strengthen residents’ laparoscopic surgical skills through structured training and shared expertise. It is also expected to contribute to improved patient safety and higher clinical standards.

Under the partnership, the two sides plan to jointly develop and implement customized training programs tailored to each year of residency and to establish a hands-on training environment leveraging Olympus Korea’s training center infrastructure.

The program will target residents from their first through fourth years, with courses divided into basic (first- and second-year residents) and advanced (third- and fourth-year residents) levels to provide step-by-step training. The KSGO will oversee academic components, such as curriculum design and faculty selection, while Olympus Korea will support practical training using its facilities and equipment in Songdo, Incheon.

The Olympus Korea Medical Training & Education Center (KTEC), established in 2017, is a specialized medical education facility equipped with training rooms and laboratories that replicate real operating environments. Through the collaboration, residents are expected to receive more structured, simulation-based laparoscopic training.

“We are pleased that this agreement will help ob-gyn residents refine their laparoscopic skills in a more systematic environment," said Park In-je, Executive Vice President and Head of the Medical Business Division at Olympus Korea. "Olympus Korea will continue to leverage its endoscopic technologies to support physicians in delivering safer and more precise treatment.”

KSGO Chairperson Lee Jae-kwan said the partnership aims to strengthen the training system within residency programs and build a more clinically focused educational framework.

“We expect the step-by-step program will help residents effectively acquire surgical skills and apply them in clinical practice,” he said.
