NIST on March 19, 2026, published the final version of Special Publication 800-81 Revision 3, updating its guidance on secure deployment of the Domain Name System, a core internet service that has become increasingly important to enterprise security. The publication succeeds the initial public draft released on April 10, 2025.

The guide treats DNS not simply as background network infrastructure, but as a strategic security layer. DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, underpins most digital communications, and can also serve as both an enforcement point for enterprise security policy and a signal of potentially malicious activity. A failure or compromise in DNS can therefore have organisation-wide consequences.

NIST’s updated guidance focuses on protecting the integrity, availability and confidentiality of DNS services. It says DNS can support zero-trust architecture by acting both as a policy enforcement point and as a source of information when organisations evaluate access requests.

The publication also addresses the distinct security requirements of authoritative DNS and recursive DNS. For authoritative DNS, NIST highlights the use of DNSSEC to protect the integrity and authenticity of DNS data. For recursive DNS, it places added emphasis on safeguarding the confidentiality of client queries.

The final version includes clarifications made after the public comment process, including additional guidance on reducing information leakage in DNS queries and responses. That emphasis reflects a broader shift in cybersecurity policy: infrastructure once treated as a technical utility is increasingly being recast as a control layer central to enterprise resilience.

One note on the date: NIST’s official draft announcement is explicitly dated April 10, 2025, while the publication page for the draft states it was “obsoleted on March 19, 2026, by SP 800-81 Rev. 3,” which indicates the final version was issued on that date.
