Microsoft announced Friday that it will invest 1.6 trillion yen (US$10 billion), in Japan between 2026 and 2029 as part of a major push to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and strengthen cybersecurity cooperation with the Japanese government.
The initiative was unveiled during a visit to Tokyo by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith. A key component of the plan includes training 1 million engineers and software developers by 2030 to help address the country’s growing demand for advanced technology talent.
Microsoft will also work with domestic partners including SoftBank and Sakura Internet to expand AI computing capacity within Japan. The effort is designed to allow companies and government agencies to store sensitive data domestically while still accessing Microsoft Azure cloud services.
In addition, the company plans to deepen intelligence-sharing efforts with Japanese authorities on cyber threats and crime prevention.
