KG Mobility (hereinafter KGM) is significantly strengthening its Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to secure leadership in the future mobility market. KGM announced on Thursday, the 19th, that it signed a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Development of AI Humanoid Technology” with the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) at KIMM in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. The ceremony was attended by KGM CEO Ki-young Hwang, KIMM President Seog-Hyeon Ryu, and ETRI President Seung Chan Bang, along with other officials from each institution.

This agreement is part of a national project promoted by the Autonomous Growth AI Humanoid Strategic Research Group (hereinafter Strategic Research Group). It aims to secure global-level competitiveness early by consolidating national robot technology capabilities and to maximize the “mission performance capability” of robots that can be deployed immediately at actual industrial sites, moving beyond simple technological development. Currently, the Strategic Research Group is centered around KIMM and ETRI, with major domestic universities and numerous overseas research institutes and universities from the U.S. and Europe participating in global technology convergence. They are focusing their research efforts on realizing a “humanoid companion that coexists with humans in industrial sites and daily life.”

Through this cooperation, the three institutions will develop “customized robots” that reflect the requirements of manufacturing sites from the planning stage. In particular, they plan to verify work performance in high-difficulty processes and closely evaluate safety and adaptability when collaborating with humans in actual workspaces. Each institution will take on a systematic division of roles based on its unique expertise. KGM will open its actual production lines—such as vehicle inspection, parts transport, and assembly—as demonstration environments to evaluate the performance and field adaptability of the robots and will convey specific requirements needed at actual manufacturing sites. KIMM will take charge of the overall design of a “standard humanoid robot platform” optimized for industrial sites, as well as the development of high-performance, high-reliability hardware, including drive modules capable of handling heavy loads and precision control, and whole-body sensory systems. Finally, ETRI will build next-generation intelligence to perceive complex, fluid manufacturing environments and apply autonomous work algorithms to robots, enabling them to understand verbal instructions from workers, make independent judgments, and perform missions.

Following a Letter of Intent (LOI) regarding autonomous driving AI technology signed with ETRI on the 16th, KGM is accelerating the introduction of AI technology with the finalization of this MOU. A KGM official stated that by developing customized robots that reflect the voices of the manufacturing field from the planning stage, the company will achieve a paradigm innovation in automation across vehicle inspection and manufacturing processes. They added that the company will do its best to implement AI-based smart factories through close technological cooperation with research institutions.
