K-brokerages post sharp profit growth overseas in 2025

(Yonhap)

South Korean securities firms posted a sharp increase in overseas earnings last year, with net profit from foreign subsidiaries jumping nearly 70 percent from a year earlier to surpass 650 billion won ($433 million), driven by strong performances in the United States and Hong Kong.

According to data released Monday by the Financial Supervisory Service, overseas subsidiaries of domestic brokerages recorded combined net profit of $455.8 million in 2025.

The figure marked an increase of $184.1 million from the previous year’s $271.7 million, up 67.8 percent.

Profit from overseas operations has risen steadily for two consecutive years, climbing from $106.5 million in 2023 to $271.7 million in 2024 and then to $455.8 million last year.

The overseas subsidiaries accounted for 8.7 percent of the combined annual net profit generated by South Korea’s 16 securities firms with foreign operations.

The strong performance was led mainly by subsidiaries in the United States, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Of the 15 countries where South Korean brokerages operate, subsidiaries in 13 countries generated combined profit of $465.8 million.

In contrast, operations in China and Japan posted combined losses of $10 million.

South Korean securities firms are also expanding their overseas footprint beyond Southeast Asia into markets such as India.

As of the end of last year, 16 South Korean securities firms operated 93 overseas offices across 15 countries, including 83 local subsidiaries and 10 representative offices.

Asian markets including Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam accounted for 66 offices, representing 71 percent of the total.

By company, Mirae Asset Securities operated the largest overseas network with 29 offices, including 26 subsidiaries and three representative offices.

It was followed by Korea Investment & Securities with 11 offices, NH Investment & Securities with eight, and KB Securities with seven.
