Hyundai Rotem has signed a detailed cooperation agreement with ‘Bumar Łabędy,’ a subsidiary of the state-owned Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), for the local production of K2 tanks, heralding an era of European local production for the Polish-version K2 tank (K2PL).

This contract is a follow-up measure to the second executive agreement signed last August and is seen as a materialization of Hyundai Rotem’s strategy to establish Poland as a European hub for the K2 tank.

Hyundai Rotem announced on April 28 that it held a contract signing ceremony in Warsaw, Poland, on April 27 (local time) for cooperation on the local production and maintenance of the K2PL and armored recovery vehicles. The ceremony was attended by Hyundai Rotem President Lee Yong-bae and Bumar President Monika Kruczek, among others.

Through this agreement, the two companies have agreed to establish a local assembly and production system and to continue discussions on the future production of derivative vehicles, such as combat engineer vehicles and armored vehicle-launched bridges.

The core of this cooperation is the introduction of the so-called ‘Polish Solution’. To meet local demand in Poland, the K2PL will be equipped with Polish-made key components, including front and rear cameras and an inertial navigation system. This is a customized strategy that simultaneously strengthens local defense industry capabilities and promptly reflects the requirements of the Polish armed forces.

Technology transfer and workforce development will also be fully implemented. The contract includes an on-site training plan where Bumar personnel will participate in Hyundai Rotem’s maintenance operations for the Polish Army’s K2 tanks.

The aim is to transfer maintenance technology before local production begins in earnest, thereby enhancing the Polish side’s operational capabilities at an early stage.

Hyundai Rotem has already demonstrated its exceptional delivery management capabilities by delivering the first batch of tanks under the initial executive agreement ahead of schedule.

The company envisions this contract as a stepping stone to transform Poland into a production hub for K2 tanks, from which it can expand across Europe.

This project is also expected to contribute to the revitalization of the domestic defense industry ecosystem.

In accordance with the mutual growth cooperation strategy announced last month, Hyundai Rotem is pursuing shared growth by sharing its achievements with partner companies and supporting 200 billion won (approximately $135 million) in research and development (R&D) investment over two years.

An official from Hyundai Rotem stated, “This contract is highly significant as it establishes a practical plan to support the first overseas production of the K2 tank. We will do our utmost to contribute to Poland’s national security and to create a sustainable defense ecosystem together with our domestic partner companies.”
