HD Hyundai has become South Korea’s first company to win a key research project from the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

The company announced on Sunday that it recently signed contracts with ONR for two research projects, including improving ship performance. This marks the first time a Korean company has entered into a project contract with ONR.

ONR, which belongs to the U.S. Department of the Navy, oversees research and development (R&D) for science and technology used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Under the agreement, HD Hyundai will carry out a project to enhance ship performance using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Based on its advanced digital shipbuilding capabilities, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Seoul National University’s Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering led by Professor Kim Yong-hwan will jointly develop the technology.

The goal is to predict in real time a vessel’s survivability in rapidly changing and harsh maritime environments.

HD Hyundai has also secured another project focused on improving shipbuilding productivity using advanced manufacturing technologies. This research will be led by the Future Technology Research Institute of Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co.

With this contract, HD Hyundai noted that it has become a key partner of the U.S. Navy, collaborating from ship development to construction. It emphasized that this recognition reflects the U.S. Navy’s acknowledgement of its advanced naval technologies.
