광주경찰청 사이버범죄수사대는 5·18 민주화운동과 관련해 허위 사실이 담긴 합성 신문기사를 제작하고 유포한 피의자 총 6명을 순차적으로 검거했다고 밝혔다. 경찰은 이 중 사안의 심각성을 고려해 최초 제작·유포자에 대해 엄정하게 수사할 방침이다.
경찰에 따르면 이들은 최근 '5·18, 북에서 지령받은 간첩들 무기고 탈취, 계엄군 무차별 공격'이라는 제목의 가짜 신문기사 이미지를 만들어 온라인에 퍼뜨린 혐의를 받고 있다. 해당 이미지에는 지역 유력 매체인 '광주일보'의 제호가 무단으로 사칭됐다.
경찰은 SNS 게시물 분석과 통신·계정 추적 등을 통해 유포 피의자들을 특정했으며, 압수수색 등 치밀한 수사 끝에 지난 7월 3일 최초 제작·유포자를 검거하는 데 성공했다.
조사 결과 최초 제작·유포자인 20대 남성 A씨는 "유튜브를 지속적으로 시청하면서 5·18은 북한군의 지령을 받은 간첩들의 소행이라는 사실을 사람들이 믿게 하고 싶었다"며 "AI 애플리케이션을 이용해 허위 신문기사 이미지를 제작하고 유포했다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.
경찰은 A씨로부터 압수한 물품을 분석해 추가 범행 여부와 공범 등 배후 세력에 대한 집중 수사를 이어갈 계획이다.
광주경찰청 관계자는 "앞으로도 사회적 혼란을 야기하는 악의적이고 조직적인 허위 정보 및 가짜 뉴스에 대해서는 중간 유포자뿐만 아니라 최초 제작자까지 끝까지 추적해 엄정 처벌하겠다"며 "선제적이고 단호하게 대응하겠다"고 강조했다.
