'2026 Yeosu World Island Expo' D-4 Months: Preparations for Global Island Festival Proceeding Smoothly

First International Event Since the Launch of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City… Main Venue Construction at 62%, on Smooth Sailing - Participation from 30 Countries Confirmed, All-out Effort to Attract 3 Million Visitors, Accessibility Enhanced Through Increased Cruises and Flights - Abundant Stay-Type Content Including ‘Half-Price Island Travel’… Expectations for a Paradigm Shift in Island Tourism

(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Expo,’ the first mega-scale international event to be held since the launch of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, is drawing global attention as it approaches in just four months.

On the 29th, Jeollanam-do, Yeosu City, and the Organizing Committee for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo (hereinafter the Organizing Committee) held a joint briefing at the Jeonnam Provincial Office press room and unveiled the current status of expo preparations and a blueprint for a successful hosting. This expo is expected to go beyond a mere exhibition to become a global platform for rediscovering the value of islands in the era of climate crisis and exploring sustainable future strategies for maritime territories.

The main venue in the Jinmo district of Dolsan will feature a total of eight distinctive exhibition halls, led by the landmark "Theme Island," which embodies the image of a "brightly shining island above the sea." Here, the history and present of islands, along with the vision of future islands incorporating cutting-edge ICT technology, will be realized in a three-dimensional manner.

In particular, each exhibition hall—including the Marine Ecosystem Island, Future Island, and International Exchange Island—is planned to utilize immersive media art technology to offer visitors a visual wonder, making them feel as though they are directly experiencing the mysterious island ecosystems.

At night, spectacular media facades and thematic performances will take place, maximizing the allure of the "Yeosu Night Sea."

The sub-venues, Gae-do and Geum-odo, will be transformed into immersive experience spaces. The event showcases the "joy of staying on an island" through stay-type content, including trekking and wellness programs utilizing the island's unique natural landscape, as well as a "healing meal with three meals over one night" prepared by the island residents themselves.

Currently, construction of the exhibition grounds is proceeding at a rapid pace. The infrastructure for the main venue is 83% complete and is scheduled for completion at the end of June following the installation of road gutters next month. Meanwhile, steel frame construction is in full swing for the core landmark, the "Theme Island," with interior exhibition staging expected to be finalized by the end of July.

The eight exhibition halls, designed with a large tent (TFS) structure, will be installed in June thanks to their rapid construction capabilities, and all auxiliary facilities will be in place by the end of July. An official from the Organizing Committee emphasized, "We will welcome visitors in perfect condition after undergoing a month of trial runs and final inspections following completion."

The Organizing Committee has offered exceptional incentives with the goal of attracting 3 million visitors. Practical measures to encourage visits have been established, including a "Half-Price Island Travel" program that subsidizes 50% of ferry fares for visitors to Gaedo and Geumodo and refunds a portion of travel expenses in local currency.

Infrastructure is also being expanded to attract global visitors. The arrival of 11 international cruise ships, including the Royal Caribbean, has been confirmed, and 16 international charter flights connecting Vietnam, China, and Mongolia are scheduled to operate. Through these initiatives, it is expected that over 22,000 overseas visitors will visit. Furthermore, close consultations are underway with relevant ministries regarding the expansion of KTX services and domestic flights at Yeosu Airport to improve accessibility from the Seoul metropolitan area.

To date, 27 countries and 3 international organizations, including France, Greece, China, and Japan, have confirmed their participation. The "International Exchange Island" exhibition hall will share the unique island cultures and marine conservation know-how of each country. In particular, "Friends Days" for participating countries, such as Ireland, will be held, featuring folk dances and traditional art performances from around the world throughout the expo, completing the atmosphere of a global festival.

Ticket sales and fundraising are also progressing smoothly. To date, approximately 2.04 billion won worth of tickets have been sold, and the promotional effect is being amplified by active support from the Americas and the World Honam Association.

To alleviate chronic traffic congestion, Yeosu City has secured 10 temporary parking lots (7,400 spaces) and will operate up to 60 shuttle buses on weekends. In particular, the city plans to actively utilize maritime transportation routes, such as operating yacht shuttles connecting Gukdong Port and the Expo site, to disperse land traffic congestion.

Inspections of accommodation (1,281 establishments) and dining (6,247 establishments) infrastructure have also been completed to match the city's reputation as a tourist city visited by 10 million people annually. In addition, under the banner of an "Environmental Expo," the Organizing Committee is deploying environmental cleanup vessels at least three times a week to create a clean marine environment and is making all-out efforts to collect marine debris.

Kim Jong-ki, Secretary General of the Organizing Committee, and Jeong Hyeon-gu, Vice Mayor of Yeosu, stated, "The remaining four months are a golden time that will determine the success or failure of the Expo," adding, "We will concentrate all our capabilities to demonstrate the boundless potential of Jeonnam's islands to the world and ensure that visitors can enjoy the event safely and pleasantly."

The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, held under the theme "Islands, Connecting the Sea and the Future," will take place spectacularly throughout Yeosu City for 61 days, from September 5 to November 4.
