Walking through Urbino, one is immediately struck by a sense of order.
The Renaissance city, with its balanced streets and harmonious architecture,
quietly embodies a vision of rational human proportion.
Against this backdrop, encountering the work of Lamberto Pignotti
(b. 1926) produces a striking sense of dissonance.
Pignotti is a key figure in Italian avant-garde art and one of the pioneers of visual poetry,
a practice that merges language and image.
In his work, the boundaries between literature and visual art
are not merely blurred—they are actively dismantled.
Fragments of newspaper clippings, advertising slogans,
magazine images, and broken sentences collide on the surface of the work,
generating a new linguistic structure.
At first encounter, meaning does not settle easily.
Sentences are cut mid-way, images appear without explanation,
and narrative continuity is deliberately withheld.
Yet this fragmentation is not chaos, but strategy.
Pignotti deconstructs the language of mass media—especially advertising—
revealing how it constructs persuasion and organizes perception.
In the 1960s, through the collective Gruppo 70,
he expanded this experimentation into a broader cultural critique.
Poetry was no longer confined to the page;
it emerged from television screens, newspapers, and urban imagery.
Language became a social mechanism, and art a tool for exposing its operations.
In Urbino, this work gains particular intensity.
The Renaissance ideal of proportion
and visual harmony forms a silent counterpoint to Pignotti’s collages.
One system seeks to unify perception,
while the other exposes the artificiality of that unity.
The tension between them becomes part of the experience itself.
Ultimately, the exhibition does not offer answers.
Instead, it loosens the stability of familiar linguistic order.
In the gaps it opens, we begin to see how meaning is constructed in the first place.
Pignotti’s work in Urbino is less an object to be viewed than an experience of disruption
—quiet, persistent, and unresolved.
