What defines relationships is often misunderstood.
We assume that once words are exchanged and time is shared,
A relationship naturally forms.
But in reality, what we often see is not dialogue,
but overlapping rhythms that rarely truly meet.
I know people from different walks of life—
religious figures, politicians, diplomats, judges.
Despite their different positions, there is a common pattern:
the more someone speaks without pause,
And the more they try to pull conversations into their own pace,
The more others fade into the background.
The issue is not simply the amount of speech.
It is the manner in which it is delivered. Many people,
even in first meetings, continue speaking in their own rhythm without waiting
for the other person’s flow. In such cases, conversation becomes not an exchange, but a one-sided continuation of speech.
In this sense, listening is often not functioning as part of communication itself.
The other person’s words are not treated as something to respond to,
but merely as a temporary pause.
As a result, dialogue becomes less about exchange and more about continuation.
An elderly Maltese woman is living in the same complex.
This is not meant as a judgment of character. She is, in fact, kind—
offering lunches and inviting others to her home.
But even within this kindness, balance in conversation rarely exists.
There is very little space left for the other person’s voice.
Her preferences are also clearly expressed in daily situations.
If orange juice is not freshly squeezed, it is meaningless.
If a photo does not satisfy her, she immediately requests it to be retaken.
These are not merely preferences,
but signs of a worldview where situations must conform to her standards.
There is also an elderly Italian man who has been sending messages for years.
He repeatedly mentions having bought an 80,000-euro fully equipped Mercedes. This is less an explanation than a signal:
a one-sided attempt to communicate identity—
“This should be enough for you to understand who I am.
” But the message never truly becomes a relationship.
It remains complete only within the sender’s own narrative.
What these cases share is clear. There is much speech,
but little listening. Conversation exists, but interaction does not.
At the center of this is a fixed personal rhythm—
not coordination, but absorption of everything into one’s own flow.
Ultimately, this is less about stubbornness in a simple sense
and more about a communication style that has gradually hardened
into self-contained speech, no longer requiring reciprocity.
