North Chungcheong Province Aims to Foster Six Unicorn Companies by 2030 by Establishing a Full-Cycle Startup Ecosystem

Capabilities of Over 60 Public, Private, Industry, Academic, and Research Institutions United… Launch of the "Chungbuk Startup City Creation Task Force"

North Chungcheong Province is taking full-scale steps to consolidate regional startup capabilities and leap forward as a representative startup city of South Korea.

On the 20th, North Chungcheong Province announced the launch of the "Chungbuk Startup City Creation Task Force" and stated that it would actively respond to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' open call for Startup City creation projects. The newly launched task force is composed of a public-private-industry-academic-research cooperation system involving over 60 innovation entities, including North Chungcheong Province and Cheongju City, as well as anchor companies, universities, research institutes, investment firms, and startup support organizations.

North Chungcheong Province plans to build a full-cycle startup ecosystem that encompasses everything from the discovery of startups to commercialization, investment, scale-up, and global expansion. This will be achieved by connecting startup support projects, which have previously been pursued individually by each institution, with the region's industrial, technological, and investment capabilities. The task force plans to establish a growth ladder for startups through regular consultations and the division of roles among participating organizations. It also intends to expand open innovation between local startups and large and mid-sized enterprises, while organically linking technology commercialization by universities and research institutes with follow-up investments from investment firms.

Furthermore, it aims to create a sustainable startup environment by expanding infrastructure that supports the entry, demonstration, and settlement of startups, and by strengthening local networks. Along with this, the task force plans to concentrate its efforts on creating a structure where startups can stably settle and grow in the region by linking the policy of Chungbuk as a "Special Startup Province" overflowing with opportunities with the development of startup cities.

Chungcheongbuk-do Governor Shin Yong-han emphasized that he will consolidate all of Chungbuk's startup capabilities around the task force, which involves approximately 60 participating organizations. He stated that he will not only secure the designation as a startup city through the public competition but also foster six unicorn companies by 2030 to establish Chungbuk as Korea's representative startup hub.
