Changwon Dogye Bubu Market, the birthplace of Couples' Day, will fill the market's nights with culture and food this autumn. The plan is to go beyond a night market simply for eating and entertainment, creating a cultural marketplace where the local community, businesses, and merchants participate together to establish a new nighttime commercial district within the traditional market.

Changwon Dogye Bubu Market (Merchant Association President Choi Hye-kyung), located in Dogye-dong, Uichang-gu, Changwon Special City, announced that it will operate the "Dogye Bubu Moonlight Night Market" a total of 10 times this coming September and October.

The name of the night market was decided through a naming contest held in late July targeting merchants and commercial district experts. It embodies the meaning of "opening a happy and joyful cultural marketplace under the abundant moonlight at the birthplace of Couples' Day."

The first night market will open on September 4. The event will be held four times in September on the 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th, and six times in October on the 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th, with operating hours from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

During the event period, the market street transforms into a different atmosphere than usual. It will feature a dining zone where visitors can comfortably enjoy market food, as well as a market experience event zone, a corporate-linked pop-up zone, and a flea market. Opening ceremonies, special events, and cultural performances are also planned for each session.

Existing market stalls will take the lead in providing food. Leveraging the strengths of Dogye Bubu Market—which features not only agricultural and livestock products but also daily-oriented shops such as food stalls, rice cake shops, and side dish stores—merchants will showcase night market menus they have prepared themselves. The intention is to connect this to increased sales for existing stalls and increased foot traffic to the market, rather than creating a one-time event centered on external food vendors.

As this is a food-focused event, hygiene management and menu competitiveness are also being carefully monitored in advance. The Merchants Association and the Cultural Tourism Market Development Project Team are implementing market hygiene and disease control measures in partnership with CESCO, and are also pursuing night market menu consulting through food service-related agencies.

A key focus of this night market is "regional co-prosperity." The plan is to expand beyond internal market events into a cultural festival that involves surrounding commercial districts and the local community by organizing programs that connect local festivals, businesses, and residents.

In particular, Dogye Bubu Market holds a unique history as the birthplace of "Couple's Day," a national commemorative day celebrated on May 21st. Following the hosting of the Couple's Day Co-prosperity Festival this past May, the strategy for this Moonlight Night Market is to differentiate itself from other traditional markets by linking this identity with cultural content.

Dogye Bubu Market will receive support from the Cultural Tourism Market Development Project from this year until 2027. Accordingly, the market is implementing projects in stages to create a market where customers can linger and enjoy themselves, including environmental improvements, market experience programs, cultural events, and the establishment of digital infrastructure. Choi Hye-kyung, President of the Merchants Association, stated, “It is important to make the night market not just a one-day event, but an opportunity for new customers to get to know the market and return.” She added, “By combining the unique food of Dogye Couple Market with the story of it being the birthplace of Couple’s Day, we will create a market that citizens want to visit on autumn nights.”

Attention is focused on whether the ‘Dogye Couple Moonlight Night Market’ can lead to actual commercial revitalization and an increase in regular customers by adding a new dimension of nighttime culture and experiences to a traditional market centered on daytime shopping.
