Jincheon County Public Health Center Builds a Healthy City Through Customized Smoking Cessation Programs

Jincheon County is accelerating the creation of a smoke-free community culture by conducting diverse, customized smoking cessation education and large-scale promotional activities to protect residents' health and create a pleasant living environment.

The Jincheon County Public Health Center in North Chungcheong Province announced that it intensively operated experiential education and public campaigns around the 39th World No Tobacco Day, allowing participation from all age groups, ranging from children and adolescents to university students and general residents.

First, to change the perceptions of university students and adolescents, the center visited Korea Bio Meister High School and Woosuk University on May 19 and 20 to set up health experience booths. At these events, participants were helped to naturally experience the dangers of smoking and excessive drinking through realistic programs, such as measuring lung capacity and trying on "alcohol goggles," as well as health quizzes.

Subsequently, on the 27th, a street campaign was conducted by walking from the County Public Health Center to the smoke-free street area around Sangsan Elementary School. Participants distributed anti-smoking promotional materials to residents to raise awareness of the severity of secondhand smoke, and also carried out environmental cleanup activities to clean nearby streets, fostering an atmosphere of voluntary action among the community.

In particular, unique educational programs incorporating information and communication technology were introduced for school-age students, a crucial period for the formation of their values. The "Hologram Smoking Prevention Education," conducted for approximately 900 elementary, middle, and high school students in the district, received positive feedback for simultaneously increasing student engagement and prevention effectiveness by utilizing three-dimensional visual aids to vividly convey the adverse physical effects of tobacco and secondhand smoke.

Park Yun-ha, an official at the County Health Promotion Division, stated, "Quitting smoking and preventing smoking is a core practice that goes beyond promoting individual health to protecting the health rights of precious family members and neighbors." He added, "Moving forward, we will move away from one-sided, rote-learning-style promotion and continuously discover beneficial projects that residents can participate in and relate to in an enjoyable way, thereby establishing a smoke-free culture in their daily lives."
