Life Satisfaction of Jeonnam Residents Rises to 6.9 Points… Marriage Intention and Happiness Show Steady Upward Trend

‘2026 Jeollanam-do Social Survey’ Announced… Slowing Price Increase and Declining Private Education Costs. Medical Personnel Increased, but ‘Waiting Times for Treatment and Shortage of Specialized Personnel’ Remain Challenges

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = It has been found that the life satisfaction and happiness of residents in the Jeonnam region are showing a steady upward trend.

According to the results of the ‘2026 Jeollanam-do Social Survey’ announced by the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, the life satisfaction of Jeonnam residents was tallied at 6.9 points. This survey was conducted by the Jeollanam-do prior to integration from March 6 to 18, targeting household members aged 15 and older from 19,116 households in the Jeonnam region, covering 12 sectors including household and family, income and consumption, labor, education, and health and medical care. According to the survey results, life satisfaction continued to rise, reaching 6.6 points in 2022, 6.8 points in 2024, and 6.9 points in 2026. The proportion of positive responses regarding overall living conditions—including satisfaction with personal life, satisfaction with local life, and the frequency of feeling happy—was also significantly higher compared to 2024.

In the household and family sector, positive perceptions regarding marriage and children strengthened. The response that "one must get married" rose to 60.6% (an increase of 0.8 percentage points), and the response that "one must have children" rose to 66.5% (an increase of 1.3 percentage points). In fact, the number of first marriages in the Jeonnam region recorded 4,279 cases in 2023, 5,246 cases in 2024, and 5,523 cases in 2025, continuing an upward trend for two consecutive years.

Trends of improvement were also observed in economic and education indicators. The Consumer Price Index recorded 117.54 in 2025, but the inflation rate showed a gradual slowdown, falling from 3.5% in 2023 to 2.5% in 2024 and 2.2% in 2025.

In 2025, the average monthly private education expenditure per student was 309,000 won, a decrease of 11,000 won from the previous year. The participation rate in private education also fell by 3.6 percentage points to 68.1%, which was lower than the national average. By school level, general high schools had the highest average monthly private education expenditure (342,000 won), while elementary schools accounted for the highest proportion of participation rates (80.7%).

In the health and medical sector, improving the clinical environment was identified as a challenge despite the expansion of infrastructure. As of 2025, the number of medical institutions increased by 8 and the medical workforce by 433 compared to the previous year, and the satisfaction with medical services in 2026 rose to 3.5 points, a 0.1-point increase from 2024. However, "waiting times for treatment and hospitalization" (22.9%) and "shortage of specialized medical personnel" (13.9%) were identified as factors of dissatisfaction, indicating that measures to reduce waiting times and secure specialized personnel are necessary.

Son Myeong-do, Director of Policy Planning for the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju, stated, "This survey demonstrates that the quality of life for residents is improving overall, while also presenting challenges that need to be addressed at the level of the Integrated Special City, such as the improvement of medical services." He added, "We will utilize the survey results as foundational data for policy formulation and pursue policies that local residents can directly experience."
