Jeonnam Forest Research Institute and National Honam Regional Institute of Biological Resources Join Hands for ‘Discovery of Green Bio Materials’

Linking Biological Resources from Islands, Coasts, and Forests… Establishing a Full-Cycle Cooperation System; Expected to Increase Income for Local Foresters and Revitalize Industry through the Commercialization of Domestic Bio-Raw Materials

(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Forest Research Institute and the Island Biology Research Headquarters of the National Honam Regional Institute of Biological Resources have set out to discover green bio materials utilizing wild biological resources from the region’s forests, islands, and coast, and to establish a cooperation system for industrialization.

On the 2nd, the two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding and agreed to launch a joint cooperation system to discover the useful value of the abundant biological resources distributed in the Jeonnam region and commercialize them as materials for green bio industries such as food, cosmetics, medicine, and beauty products.

Recently, as the demand for functional materials derived from natural products has expanded and the value of domestic raw materials has risen across the bio industry, the need for industrialization utilizing local biological resources has been consistently raised. In particular, Jeonnam is recognized as possessing the optimal foundation for discovering high-value-added green bio-materials, thanks to its diverse and unique ecological environment, which includes islands, coastal areas, and subtropical forests.

This agreement is significant in that it goes beyond mere research exchange; it aims to commercialize Jeonnam's biological resources into actual domestic bio-raw materials and link the results to regional industrial development and increased income for foresters.

Both organizations plan to establish a "full-cycle cooperation system" that spans from the discovery of biological resources to functional evaluation, development of raw material production technologies, commercialization, and promotion and marketing.

Key aspects of the agreement include: discovering the useful value of wild biological resources found on islands, coasts, and forests; functional evaluation and commercialization of green bio-materials; development of standard cultivation methods and mass propagation technologies to ensure a stable supply of raw materials; joint research and promotion/marketing; and the revitalization of regional industries and increased income for foresters. Currently, the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute is actively pursuing research on the discovery of biomaterials utilizing forest resources, the development of mass propagation technologies, the establishment of standard cultivation techniques, and product commercialization in collaboration with companies. The National Honam Regional Institute of Biological Resources possesses differentiated expertise in the investigation, discovery, and utility research of island and coastal biological resources in the Honam region; therefore, this collaboration is expected to generate significant synergy.

Oh Byeong-geon, Head of the Island Biological Research Division at the National Honam Regional Institute of Biological Resources, stated, "This collaboration, linking island and coastal biological resources with forest biological resources, will serve as an important opportunity to expand the utilization value of biological resources in the Honam region." He added, "Based on the specialized research capabilities of both institutions, we will strive to revitalize the region-based green bio industry and strengthen the competitiveness of domestic biomaterials." Oh Deuk-sil, President of the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute, emphasized, “This agreement marks a meaningful starting point for integrating research capabilities on island and coastal biological resources with technologies for discovering and mass propagating forest biomaterials,” adding, “We will do our best to increase the income of local foresters and further strengthen the competitiveness of the green bio industry by making valuable use of Jeonnam’s abundant biological resources as domestic biomaterials.”
