South Jeolla Province Injects 4.3 Billion Won from Reserve Funds for ‘Livelihood Stabilization’ in Response to Middle East Crisis
300,000 Won Each in Living Stabilization Funds to Approx. 11,000 Transportation Workers - Support for Product Development Costs for 726 Travel Agencies… All-out Effort to Prevent Regional Economic Contraction
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province announced that it is implementing a ‘Livelihood Policy to Respond to the Middle East Situation’ by injecting 4.3 billion won from reserve funds to minimize the impact of high oil prices and inflation caused by instability in the Middle East.
This measure was prepared to preserve the real income of workers and maintain the vitality of the regional economy by prioritizing support for the transportation and travel industries, which are vulnerable to external economic factors.
First, South Jeolla Province has allocated 3.5 billion won to support the livelihoods of transportation workers who are suffering from a double burden of rising fuel costs and frozen fares. The beneficiaries of this support total 11,635 people, including 6,243 taxi drivers and 5,392 drivers of city, rural, chartered, and intercity buses. Each of them will receive 300,000 won in living stabilization funds. This is a preemptive measure to alleviate management difficulties and financial hardships on the ground prior to the fare hike scheduled for the second half of the year.
A budget of 850 million won will also be injected into the travel industry, which has been stagnant due to high exchange rates and reduced consumption.
Jeonnam Province will provide 2 million won per company for the development of stay-type travel packages to all 726 travel agencies registered in the region. The aim is to provide robust protection for the local tourism ecosystem by significantly expanding the scope of support from the original 300 companies to all travel agencies in Jeonnam.
Jeonnam Province plans to activate a rapid application and payment system to maximize the effectiveness of these measures. In addition, the province plans to promote support measures in cooperation with cities, counties, and related organizations, while also identifying and including additional livelihood support projects in the upcoming second supplementary budget that reflect voices from the field.
Previously, in early April, Jeonnam Province allocated 5.3 billion won from reserve funds to support heating costs for vulnerable groups, operating expenses for public bathhouses in rural areas, and export logistics costs.
Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “Energy price instability caused by the situation in the Middle East is a grave matter directly linked to the provincial economy,” adding, “We will do our utmost to protect the livelihoods of workers in vulnerable industries and preserve the vitality of the regional economy by immediately deploying available reserve funds.”
