South Jeolla Province Leads ‘Low-Carbon Agriculture’… Aims to Account for 50% of Nationwide Certified Area
Signing MOU with Korea Agricultural Technology Promotion Institute and Jeonnam Eco-friendly Agriculture Association; Establishing Public-Private Cooperation System to Promote Carbon Reduction and Increase Farm Income
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has embarked on a full-scale initiative to leap forward as a mecca for ‘low-carbon agriculture,’ leveraging its eco-friendly agricultural infrastructure, the largest of its kind in the nation.
On the afternoon of the 27th, South Jeolla Province signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding for the Expansion of Low-Carbon Agricultural Product Certification and the Implementation of Carbon Reduction’ with the Korea Agricultural Technology Promotion Institute and the Jeonnam Eco-friendly Agriculture Association at the Seojaepil Room of the Provincial Office.
This agreement was established to disseminate and educate on low-carbon agricultural technologies to respond to the climate crisis, and to build a public-private cooperative governance structure capable of encouraging voluntary participation from farmers. Last year, the certified area for low-carbon agricultural products in Jeonnam Province stood at 5,664 hectares, accounting for 33% of the total national certified area (19,026 hectares) and already boasting the largest scale in the country. With this agreement as a starting point, Jeonnam Province has set an aggressive goal to capture 50% of the national certified area by raising its certification target for this year by 41% compared to the previous year.
The participating organizations agreed to cooperate closely in five key areas: ▲ identifying and supporting farms participating in low-carbon agriculture; ▲ strengthening education and technical guidance to ensure compliance with certification standards; ▲ sharing information and establishing systems related to greenhouse gas reduction; ▲ promoting the distribution and consumption of low-carbon agricultural products; and ▲ improving the certification system and linking it with policy.
The ‘Low-Carbon Agricultural Product Certification System’ is a government-issued certification program for farmland that has received eco-friendly or Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certifications and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 10% or more through the application of low-carbon agricultural technologies. Approximately 20 officials, including Jeonnam Provincial Administrative Vice Governor Hwang Ki-yeon, Korea Agricultural Technology Promotion Agency President Lee Seok-hyeong, and Jeonnam Eco-friendly Agriculture Association President Cho Gwang-cheol, attended the signing ceremony to discuss practical cooperation measures.
Vice Governor Hwang Ki-yeon emphasized, “I hope this agreement serves as an opportunity for Jeonnam Province to leap forward as a leading hub for low-carbon agriculture and to open a new future for agriculture,” adding, “We will do our utmost to lay the foundation for expanding consumption so that low-carbon agricultural products do not remain merely as certifications but lead to tangible farm income.”
