South Jeolla Province Launches Pan-Provincial ‘Energy Saving’ Campaign to Address Resource Security Crisis
Promoting Energy Saving Action Guidelines in Joint with Korea Energy Agency – Encouraging Electricity Use During Days and Weekends with High Solar Power Generation... Aiming for Region-Specific Grid Stabilization
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has launched a joint public-private campaign to respond to the resource security crisis and spread a culture of energy conservation.
South Jeolla Province announced that it held an ‘Energy Saving Action Campaign’ for residents at the Mokpo National University Namak Campus on the 29th, in collaboration with the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Headquarters of the Korea Energy Agency.
This campaign was organized as part of nationwide measures to strengthen energy demand management following the recent issuance of a ‘Caution’ level resource security crisis alert. In particular, the campaign focused on raising residents’ awareness of the energy supply and demand crisis and disseminating ‘citizen action guidelines’ that can be immediately implemented in daily life.
At the event, five key action guidelines designed to provide practical assistance to residents were intensively promoted. The key measures include: reducing fuel consumption through voluntary participation in the five-day vehicle restriction system; turning off unnecessary lights and cutting off standby power; maintaining appropriate indoor temperatures (20°C for heating in winter, 26°C for cooling in summer); encouraging charging of electric vehicles and mobile phones during daytime hours; and recommending the use of home appliances (washing machines, vacuum cleaners, etc.) on weekends.
In particular, Jeonnam Province emphasized an energy conservation strategy that differentiates it from other cities and provinces. Jeonnam has a regional characteristic where output control frequently occurs due to weather conditions, as solar power generation facilities are concentrated there.
Accordingly, the province launched a campaign designed to encourage electricity usage during daytime hours when solar power generation is abundant, and on weekends in spring and autumn when power demand is relatively low. It is anticipated that if this "Energy Shift" becomes established, it will not only save energy but also have a much greater grid stabilization effect than other regions by preventing power system overload.
The main points include: Yoo Hyun-ho, Director General of the Energy Industry Bureau of Jeollanam-do, emphasized, “Energy conservation is the most basic yet powerful response measure that any resident can immediately practice in their daily lives during a national crisis.” He added, “We will further strengthen publicity to spread the atmosphere of energy conservation throughout the local community and build a robust energy crisis response system together with the residents.”
Jeollanam-do plans to continue relay campaigns centered on areas with high pedestrian traffic in cooperation with cities, counties, and related organizations, while simultaneously implementing multifaceted energy policies, such as efficiency improvement projects for energy-vulnerable groups.
