South Jeolla Province Tightens ‘Fishermen’s Safety Net’… Significantly Expands Support for Fisheries Policy Insurance
Enrollment Age for Safety Insurance Raised to 90, Self-Contributions for Small-Scale Fishermen Reduced by Up to 8%p - Premium Payment Deadline Temporarily Extended to Alleviate Fisheries Management Cost Burden Amidst High Fuel Prices
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province is actively promoting the expansion of enrollment in fisheries policy insurance to protect fishermen and crew members from various accidents that may occur during fishing activities and to support stable fisheries management.
Fisheries policy insurance serves as a representative livelihood safety net for fishermen, consisting of: ‘Fishermen’s Safety Insurance,’ which covers injuries and permanent disabilities occurring during fishing operations; ‘Fishing Vessel Accident Insurance,’ which compensates for damages from maritime accidents such as sinking or damage to fishing vessels; and ‘Fishermen’s Accident Insurance,’ which compensates for personal injuries to crew members during fishing operations.
This year, South Jeolla Province has revised overall guidelines and further strengthened its support system to ensure that more fishermen can benefit.
First, reflecting the reality of aging fishing communities, the eligibility criteria for the ‘Fishermen’s Safety Insurance’ have been expanded by raising the enrollment age from the existing 15–87 years to 15–90 years. In the case of ‘Fishing Vessel Accident Insurance,’ the scope of benefits has been broadened by drastically expanding insurance premium support to all vessels, whereas previously it was limited to those under 10 tons.
In particular, to alleviate the economic burden on small-scale fishermen, the self-payment ratios for the ‘Fishing Crew Accident Insurance’ have been significantly lowered by tonnage. For vessels under 3 tons, the self-payment ratio has been reduced by 8 percentage points from the existing 20% to 12%; for vessels between 3 and 5 tons, it has been lowered from 20% to 15%; and for vessels between 5 and 10 tons, it has been lowered from 22% to 17%, which is expected to ease the burden on small-scale fishermen.
In addition, special measures will be implemented to mitigate the burden of fishing operations, which has been exacerbated by rising international oil prices resulting from the prolonged Middle East war. Jeonnam Province has decided to temporarily extend the payment deadline for insurance premiums for fishermen and fishing vessels. Subscribers wishing to apply for the extension should bring their identification card and visit the member cooperative or branch where they originally joined by the 30th of this month.
