South Jeolla Province Takes 'Preemptive Measures' to Stabilize Supply Ahead of Onion Harvest Season… Holds Major Production Area Council Meeting

Moving Away from Reactive Measures Like Government Shipment Suspensions… Strengthening Producer-Centered Autonomous Response System; Plans to Propose Expanding Government Stockpiles and Stricter Management of Imported Onions Before Full-Scale Harvest in June

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province, the nation's largest onion producing region, has launched preemptive measures to manage supply and demand and stabilize prices ahead of the full-scale onion harvest season.

South Jeolla Province announced that it held the "Onion Major Production Area Council Meeting" on the 22nd, attended by 24 experts from onion producer organizations, the Self-Help Fund Association, agricultural cooperatives in major production areas, and the Korea Rural Economic Institute.

The Onion Major Production Area Council is a governance body that shares and analyzes observation data and supply and demand trends by institution, and discusses maintaining appropriate cultivation areas and managing plant growth. This is particularly significant in that it moves away from past government-led supply and demand control measures, such as reactive shipment suspensions, and instead strengthens a preemptive and autonomous response system centered on local governments and producer organizations.

At the meeting, participants reviewed the current growth status of onions as well as supply, demand, and price trends, and explored various measures to stabilize prices during the harvest season. Key topics discussed in depth included postponing the shipment of mid-season onions, government stockpiling plans for mid-to-late season varieties, and the revitalization of the onion storage and processing industries.

Furthermore, Jeonnam Province agreed to propose strong government-level supply and demand stabilization measures to support market prices before the full-scale harvest of mid-to-late season onions begins this coming June. The proposal is expected to include the preemptive expansion of government stockpiles and strengthened supervision of imported onions.

Currently, the onion cultivation area in Jeonnam covers 6,072 hectares, making it the undisputed number one major production region, accounting for 34% of the total national cultivation area. Accordingly, Jeonnam Province has secured a total budget of 14.4 billion won for this year’s crop stable production and supply projects and is continuing multifaceted support to address climate change and stabilize farm income.

An official from Jeonnam Province stated, "As onions are a major vegetable directly linked to the national diet, price stability during the harvest season is of paramount importance." He added, "We will work closely with producer organizations and agricultural cooperatives to proactively regulate supply and demand, while also making multifaceted efforts, such as making recommendations to the government, to ensure farmers receive fair prices."
