(MASGA·Make American Shipbuilding Great Again)’ 프로젝트를 계기로, 국내 조선업계의 미 해군 함정 MRO 시장 진출 확대에 대한 기대감도 고조되고 있다.

South Jeolla Province Selected for DAPA’s ‘Defense Innovation Cluster Ship MRO’ Competition… Gaining Momentum for Establishing Southwest Region Hub

Total investment of 49 billion won from 2026 to 2030… Super-regional cooperation among Jeonnam, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam - Expectations for smart MRO technology development, entry into global markets, and U.S. Navy MRO market - A significant achievement following selection in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy competition last April… Accelerating structural improvements in the shipbuilding industry

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has been finally selected for the ‘Defense Innovation Cluster Ship Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO)’ competition organized by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). With this, the ‘establishment of a Southwest Region Ship MRO industry hub,’ a key initiative being pursued by the province, is expected to gain further momentum.

This project will be implemented over five years from 2026 to 2030 with a total budget of 49 billion won, comprising 24.5 billion won in state funds and 24.5 billion won in local funds. In particular, as this project is being carried out as a super-regional cooperation initiative involving Jeonnam, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, synergistic effects are expected within Korea's shipbuilding and defense belt.

Through this project, Jeonnam Province plans to provide comprehensive support for: ▲establishment of a support center for naval vessel MRO partners; ▲establishment of shared equipment; ▲development and demonstration of smart MRO technologies; ▲certification and security consulting; and ▲defense exports.

Specifically, by establishing high-cost shared equipment, the province aims to significantly enhance the naval vessel MRO service capabilities of small and medium-sized partner companies. Simultaneously, it will pursue the development of high-value-added smart MRO technologies, such as maintenance support robots, the development of discontinued products, and the localization of special materials.

The global naval vessel MRO market is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 2% until 2030, reaching approximately $65 billion. Furthermore, expectations are rising for the domestic shipbuilding industry to expand its entry into the U.S. Navy's naval vessel MRO market, driven by the "MASGA (Make American Shipbuilding Great Again)" project—a strategy recently proposed by the Korean government to revive the U.S. shipbuilding industry. The synergy with local infrastructure is also drawing attention. With the full-scale opening of the Korea Coast Guard Maintenance Depot in Mokpo last March, demand for naval vessel MRO has surged, and the growth foundation of Jeonnam's ship repair industry, where repair shipyards and equipment suppliers are concentrated, is expanding alongside it.

Jeonnam Province is evaluated as having established a solid foothold for the revitalization of the naval vessel MRO industry by successively securing this Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) project, following its selection last April for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's "Support Project for Strengthening Global Competitiveness of Small and Medium-sized Shipbuilding Vessel MRO."

Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province achieved a remarkable feat in April of this year by being selected in successive shipbuilding industry competitions organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, including the Shipbuilding and Marine Production Process Innovation (AX) Infrastructure Establishment Project, the Design Engineering Technology Support Project for Small and Medium-sized Shipbuilding, the Production and Manufacturing Project for Eco-friendly Ship Cryogenic Insulation Systems, and the Support Project for Strengthening Global Competitiveness of Small and Medium-sized Shipbuilding Vessel MRO. With the addition of this DAPA competition, it is expected that the structural improvement and future competitiveness of Jeonnam's shipbuilding industry will accelerate even further.

Kim Ki-hong, Director General of the Strategic Industries Bureau of Jeollanam-do, stated, “We will systematically build a foundation for the naval vessel MRO industry in the southwestern region by linking support projects from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration with the opening of the Korea Coast Guard Maintenance Depot,” adding, “We will do our utmost to support local shipbuilding companies in enhancing their technological competitiveness and successfully entering the global market.”
