Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Opens ‘Yeongam No. 1 Dormitory’ for Rural Medical and Welfare Personnel
18.1 Billion Won Invested, Including the Nation’s First Metropolitan Extinction Response Fund… First Fruition of the 5-Year Housing Support Project - Dedicated Dormitories Built in Yeongam, Jindo, and Sinan… Head-on Breakthrough of the 'Regional Extinction Crisis' by Attracting Medical and Welfare Personnel
(Yeongam = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City has rolled up its sleeves to resolve the chronic shortage of medical and welfare infrastructure in rural and island regions.
Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City announced that it held an opening ceremony on the 10th for the ‘No. 1 Nursing and Welfare Dormitory (Dalbitchae)’ in Yeongam-gun, marking the first fruition of the ‘Housing Support Project for Rural Nursing Personnel, etc.,’ which has been promoted to strengthen medical and welfare infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
This project is a core initiative of the 5-year plan to revitalize rural regions struggling with population decline and deteriorating living conditions. A total project cost of 18.1 billion won was invested, including 6.6 billion won from the Metropolitan Extinction Response Fund, marking the first such initiative in the nation.
Currently, starting with Yeongam-gun, the construction of dormitories exclusively for nursing and welfare personnel—with capacitys of 20 to 30 rooms each—is being pursued sequentially in Jindo-gun and Sinan-gun.
For a long time, rural and island regions have chronically suffered from a shortage of specialized personnel, such as nurses, due to the severe disparity in living environments compared to urban areas. Consequently, local medical institutions and welfare facilities have been unable to secure adequate staffing, leading to a vicious cycle where residents are unable to receive necessary medical and welfare services in a timely manner.
The newly opened Nursing and Welfare Dormitory in Yeongam-gun goes beyond the meaning of a mere residential space. It is expected to serve as a reliable pillar of support, encouraging the stable settlement and long-term employment of specialized personnel in the healthcare and welfare sectors. Jeong Gwang-seon, Head of the Health and Welfare Headquarters of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, stated, “The influx and settlement of skilled young professionals will serve as a driving force to lead a ‘virtuous cycle of regional development,’ breathing new life into rural and fishing communities facing the crisis of population decline and revitalizing the local economy.” He added, “We will continue to do our utmost to improve living conditions so that residents can safely access high-quality medical and welfare services wherever they are.”
